2009 Jersey International Air Rally

It’s being planned already, it will be even better, but just as caring, the 2009 Jersey International Air Rally

One of Europe’s best loved Rallies will be held on the weekend of Friday 26th to Sunday 28th June 2009

The rally competitions will be similar to previous rallies but we have not yet decided where the starting point will be (it won’t be in Asia or Africa – did I give anything away?) and how many questions to give you after your tiring but rewarding flight.
Marks this year were awarded for airmanship, timing, observation, precision and knowledge. The programme for the 2008 rally is available at: http://www.jerseyaeroclub.com/content/view/145/57/

All money raised this year went to our helping hands charity, providing a day of fun and flying to disadvantaged children. It was a great success – I flew 4 children around the island (priceless seeing constant smiles without an off switch) one will be an aerobatic pilot given the chance.

We expect to have the application form online by the end of the year. But if you cannot wait and want to register your aircraft and team immediately, please contact the Rally Manager, Eveline Hawkin, at evelinehawkin@hotmail.co.uk

The BASIC & FULL package for the 2008 Rally worked well, allowing everyone to efficiently manage their budget so we will offer the same packages for the 2009 Jersey International Air Rally

We are using the Pomme d’Or hotel (http://www.seymourhotels.com/PommedOrHotel/ for information) again for your accommodation and the Rally functions, in St. Helier.
Please book early to avoid disappointment and ensure a room, we have a limited number of rooms reserved (42% of the hotel), we ran out of rooms this year.
Hotel rooms will only be booked for each guest/rally team member after the receipt of a ₤50 deposit per person has been received.

We look forward to seeing all our previous rally entrants again as well as many new ones.

Happy landings

2009 Jersey International Air Rally Update

Hello everyone, I hope you had a very Merry Christmas.

Here is the latest update for the 2009 Rally, from the club’s website:

54th JERSEY INTERNATIONAL AIR RALLY
Friday 26th to Sunday 28th June 2009.

Welcome to the 2009 Jersey International Air Rally.
2009 will see the 54th air rally organised by the Jersey Aero Club. Following the traditional theme, the event will bring together pilots from many countries, with varying levels of experience for a week end of flying competitions, good food, and friendship.
Arriving in Jersey on the Friday, competitors will have taken part in several competitions over Normandy including a timed arrival, spot landing and timed circuit before parking by the clubhouse where a warm welcome awaits. Relaxing in the convivial atmosphere, pilots and crews will renew acquaintances, often from previous rallies, and make new friends, with little more to do than enjoy a great week end in the beautiful island of Jersey.
Entrants can choose either the FULL or BASIC package.
The FULL package, based on double occupancy for the Friday or Saturday nights at the Pomme D’Or Hotel in St. Helier (www.seymourhotels.com) includes entry to all competitions, welcome drink and lunch on the Friday, Friday spectacular seafood buffet, Saturday morning car treasure hunt followed by a vin d’honneur, lunch at the aero club and Saturday night gala dinner dance and awards ceremony. The Pomme D’Or Hotel is the venue for the Friday and Saturday nights functions and will be offering its guests free accommodation for the Sunday night. Each crew will receive a souvenir plaque.
The BASIC package also includes entry to all competitions, welcome drink and lunch on Friday, Saturday morning car treasure hunt, Saturday night gala dinner dance and awards ceremony, and the souvenir plaque. By opting for this package, you are free to choose your own hotel (Jersey Tourism website – www.jersey.com) and of course to join us for the Friday evening and the Saturday lunch. These will have to be booked and paid for separately.
Jersey Airport is generously waiving the landing fees and sponsoring our vin d’honneur. The Jersey Aero Club will not be charging the normal facility fee, therefore enabling us to keep the entry fee to a minimum.
We very much look forward to seeing you all in Jersey, whether seasoned competitors, first time entrants or brand new PPL’s.

Applications forms to be sent to: Rally Manager, Jersey Aero Club, Jersey Airport, JE3 7BP
Enquiries: Telephone: +44(0)1534 743990, Fax: +44(0)1534 741290
E-mail: info@jerseyaeroclub.com – Website: www.jerseyaeroclub.com

Any new info & I will inform you all.

We hope to see you there; let’s make this the biggest in recent history.
You could come to us after the Quiberon Fly In, take part in two major GA events in Western Europe with only the flying cost of one trip!
Make it a flying holiday to remember.

A Safe, Flying Filled and Extremely Happy New Year to all.

Jersey Rally

Is it really the 45th? I can remember taking part in the first Jersey Rally in a Messenger from Staverton. Few aircraft had radio and the RAF provided a Chipmunk to monitor the route from Southampton in case anyone had to ditch. Southampton and Jersey were both grass airfields and the Aero Club building was at the other end of the airfield from its present position. The next rally I attended was in 1973 when I was CFI.
Best wishes to all there. Is John Such still around? I gave him his first flight when he was a teenager.

Reminder, deadline #1

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all well.

A quick reminder that the deadline for enjoying the accommodation discount for the Rally is Saturday night; 28 February.
Book now, before it is too late.

Why not take a well earned week off , fly to Quiberon, meet friends and make new ones, then on the way back on Friday 26th June, do the rally navigation competition (you’re already in France) and have a weekend in Jersey, taking home a few prizes in the process.

A week you will remember for the rest of your life, as well as boast about to your Grandchildren.

Last Chance for Accommodation Discount

Hello everyone,

Hope your flying is enjoyable and you are doing a lot of it.

A last chance to enjoy the accommodation discount for the Rally is tonight; 28 February!

Book now, before it is too late.

Don’t forget the Quiberon idea, you will only do an extra 2 hours flying, free landing fees in Jersey (Rally entrants only this weekend) and cheaper fuel than in France and the UK mainland.
Also don’t forget the 50˚N rule, claim back all the tax on your fuel purchased in the UK if you travel south of 50˚N (Pilots travelling from the UK only).

Rally Update

Hello everyone,

Hope your flying is enjoyable and you are doing a lot of it.

We already have 19 entries, with 3 months to go; it looks to be one of the best rallies yet.

We are already well into planning the competitions, gathering the prizes and completing all the arrangements for you to have a wonderful time.

Believe it or not the present economic climate has probably made this year’s Rally the best value yet for both British pilots and European.

The British Pilots will enjoy the same price as last year and with the pound losing up to 30% of its value against the Euro and US Dollar, this Rally is still in pounds, so it is most likely going to be the best value for money flying event for a Brit, this year.

For all our European entrants, we could be the cheapest full package event they will attend this year, thanks to the British Government.
Not forgetting the price for fuel is possibly the cheapest in the UK and the Euro will buy up to 30% more at present.

Don’t forget the 50˚N rule, claim back all the tax on your fuel purchased in the UK if you travel south of 50˚N (Pilots travelling from the UK only).

Most likely the team from Ultimate High will return, so if you want to try some aerobatics, you can on Saturday after the competition.
For our European colleagues, it will be even more value than before.

If you haven’t already entered, it is far from late, sign up and bring a couple of friends from your club – you will automatically be entered into the highest scoring club competition.

Next time I post I will be able to give some competition information.

And as last year the team fromKandidprints will be in attendance as well, to capture the arrivals. This year they will be offering the chance to purchase printed 8" x 6" copies of the photographs from the club house.

Flying Boat
You seem to be very excited that there are already 19 entrants?
We have to turn the clock back to when the aero club was by the fuel farm which is the airport social club.
The fuel farm was not there and in the 60s and 70s the Rally would be attracting upwards of a hundered entrants, yes one hundered plus aircraft would turn up.
So those were the days.
Shame now you are lucky to get between 30 and 40 aircraft but things have changed, not only the credit crunch but more choice of where pilots can go to to have a rally.
Anyway all the best

Rally Update

Hello Everyone,

Another update for the Rally.

We now have over 20 entries and with more than two and a half months left to go, we could fill up.
We only have parking for up to 50 aircraft; depending on what the aircraft types are, that enter, this could reduce. We have had to turn people away in the past.
Don’t delay and sign up today (entries off our website – http://www.jerseyaeroclub.com)

We have had a type error pointed out to us by an entrant, the full package showed Friday or Saturday night; we can assure you the package is Friday AND Saturday night as well as “Sunday night free”

The rooms we have held at the Pomme d’Or will be released by the middle of May, if you want a guaranteed room in the Pomme d’Or hotel book before then.

To do our bit to help reduce our Carbon Footprint, this year the programme will be released electronically. (We will post a copy if you do not have an Email address)

We can confirm that ‘Ultimate High’ are coming and you can spend your Saturday flying inverted and at very unusual attitudes over the Channel.

All for now

Update, time to book if not already entered

Hello Everyone,

Less than two months to go now and we are well under way to having a great rally.

A quick update.

We are running out of bedrooms at the Pomme d’Or (the hotel where we are holding the two evening functions), we only have 5 twin bedded rooms left and a few doubles.
If you are still thinking of coming but not yet registered please do now, to avoid disappointment.
So we can guarantee the room for you, we need to place a deposit with the hotel, please help us to help you.

Just to remind you of your weekend:

Friday - Competition day (get a good night’s sleep on Thursday), after your successful competition completion; lunch at the club until the middle of the afternoon then a traditional seafood buffet at the Pomme d'Or Hotel, followed by dancing in the evening.

Saturday – All day, Car treasure hunt around the island, Vin d'honneur & hog roast lunch at the club followed by the afternoon free to explore our beautiful island.
At night we have a Gala dinner with the presentation of all the prizes at the Pomme D'Or Hotel in St. Helier, folled by dancing to ‘The Grumpy Old Men’.

Sunday – An optional lunch in Deauville, a welcome break on the journey home for those of you not taking advantage of the free night’s accommodation in the Pomme d’Or hotel.
For the die hards who will stay, but do not want to visit Deauville, lunch will also be available at the aero club.

Book now to avoid disappointment.

Happy landings

Hello Everyone,

A quick update for the Rally.

AVGAS, a pilot’s biggest cost, and Jersey’s biggest gift to you, in May it was only 95p a litre (90p if you are an AOPA member) normally around 2/3 the UK price and ½ the price in many European airfields.
UK Pilots can claim all their duty on the fuel carried from any UK airfield outbound from the UK, find the form on our website: http://www.jerseyaeroclub.com/content/view/187/2/

We are running out of time for registering you in the Pomme d’Or if you have not already signed up, any remaining room not confirmed by us at the end of the month will be released, after this time we will try to get you into this hotel, but accommodation on the island is filling fast and the Pomme d’Or is one of the most popular hotels in Jersey.
If you book late and we cannot get you into the Pomme, we will do our utmost to get you into suitable accommodation elsewhere.

To avoid disappointment sign up for the Rally before the end of the month.

Next week we should be able to advise you of the duty free available for all rally entrants. :)

Urgent Accommodation info

Hello Everyone,

An urgent update for the Rally.

We are running out of rooms.

The Pomme d’Or has sold all of its rooms, except for the last few that we have. They are about to take our last few rooms from us.

Some of you have said to Eveline you will come but not yet confirmed.

Please book now, otherwise we cannot guarantee you will be in the same hotel as your fellow competitors.
It would be a shame you have to stay a few miles away from all the fun due to delaying your registration with Eveline.

To avoid disappointment sign up for the Rally now.

On a lighter note.
As I promised some Duty Free price info:

A selection will be available at the rally.
Orders must be placed in the flying room on arrival.

Bells whisky, Gordon gin, Smirnoff vodka...only £9.99 per litre
200 Benson & Hedges cigarettes....only £26.00
Treat yourself to a bottle of Hennessy VSOP cognac for only £32.99

Prices can change by the time you arrive.

Some more info in a couple of days.

The weather this morning put paid to the Nav exercise, fog over the islands and channel, however it cleared to beautiful blue skies at 10:45 and many of the competitors came across. I believe out of 32 expected, 30 have already arrived or will be coming across tomorrow.
