How does this thing manage to get airborne...?
With a reduced fuel load and long runway!
:p
I have seen pictures of a USAF F-111 (prototype?) with 6 pylons loaded with 6 Mk82s each in flight. Cant recall seeing one in flight with 8 plyons loaded like that though.
Anyone got any???

Indeed, it is. I wasn't aware that the AMX had been tested with the IRIS-T. Are the Italians looking to put the weapon onto their AMX's as an AIM-9 replacement? (As a side question does anyone know if the AMX can carry AAM's underwing as well or if the wingtips are the only place for AAM's?)
As for the picture batch as a whole thanks a lot! Lots of interesting shots. The picture with the Marte anti-ship missiles is interesting because the external fuel tanks are fitted on the inboard wing hardpoints whereas you usually see them on the outboard pylons? Was this just a test fit or can AMX's carry external fuel tanks on all four underwing pylons?

I've seen a picture with 8 pylons loaded in flight (not with the MERs though). Almost certain it was during initial testing though. I'll see if I can hunt it down over the weekend.

There was a picture in an old book I saw back in the early 1980s which showed a grey(?) F-111 loaded with cargo canisters on all 4 pylons. The outer 2 pylons had triple racks, while im almost sure the inners had MERs..

Here's a picture from an RAF Phantom carrying quite a lot.
A phantom dropping 18 500lb bombs.
