Hello everyone

First post on board. Couple of things if I may. As part of my ever increasing job of clearing a few sites out I am now in need of parts of the AP1086 to help match up things I am locating. I know I could always ask about them on here but I would literally be days putting them in (see blog link below). Quite a number of people over here in Australia already know about this cleanup (Hi Mark!)

Anyway, I;ve been trying to get a hold of Parts 5 and 6 specifically. Over here it would appear that none of the major museums have it (though still waiting on answer from Pt Cook after four months) and to get it from the UK is quite difficult for some reason. Any suggestions?

For those of you that may be interested in the project I have been doing I have a blog up and running. Its well overdue for an update but there are many entries already going back to the start of the year. Its not a restoration but more of a rescue/clearout of many parts

http://mygrandpasshed.blogspot.com

I found out yesterday that a lot of parts from the shed are already installed in aircraft at the Australian War Memorial They include

Bristol Beaufort
DH9 (a WW1 light bomber)
Lancaster, both currently on display in the Anzac Hall
CAC Wirraway and the de Havilland Mosquito in the Aircraft Hall

and
Spitfire in the WW2 gallery includes a few electrical components.

Anyway thats enough rambling. Those over here who knew of Hudsons' Stores in Melbourne - thats the new place I'm clearing out at the moment. Mostly vehicular (Blitz, Ford, Dodge) but a pile of Aircraft Batteries (Mainly for Wirraway, Liberator and Mustang) and some wheels still there.

Cheers for now - any help greatly appreciated!

Hi

I have to say that is a remarkable blog! I can remember going to Hudsons stores in the late 70's with my grandfather when it was still in the city, I was probably only 5 or 6 at the time. Later as a teenager a friend and I went there several times when it was in Nth Richmond?, memories of it are that there was SO much stuff (a lot appeared like junk to me) and I would have happily bought a lot of it but convincing the owners to actually sell some of their stock was like pulling teeth! One small item I still have is an aircraft spark plug like the one pictured in your blog. Another item I remember is there was lots of WW1 army mess tins which are worth a fortune now.

Probably the most vivid memory I have though is of 2 old men, one probably your grandfather, sitting in their shop of treasures, and just content to gaze out the front window across the park with their binoculars, not having a care in the world.

Cheers Paul

Hi Paul

Yes thats the old stores in Richmond. BY the time I'd got to it the place had been truly cherry picked, but one of the things I prefer to do is just buy the entire contents of a room, and then empty it. Funnily enough, the family prefer that too ! We chucked a lot of scrap metal from grandad's shed - about 15 tonnes, and are set to do the same in Richmond. The older guys you have a memory of is probably the Pearse's, I have seen some pics of them but thats about all !

Grandad's shed was over in Brunswick, no windows though :-) It was not far from Hughes Aircraft. I think thats what kept him going so long - 101 when he died - mind you that was 20 years ago. Gee, wish I'd gotten into this sooner !

Hi Bellarine

Just bumping this back to the top for you. Perhaps if you post a couple of photos of parts you cannot identify including any visible part numbers the forum members may be able to help you out.

Cheers Paul

Many thanks Paul

Here's a couple of pics - this is from yesterday in the garden....

Can anyone confirm that these are Moasquito wheels? The axle thats been fitted to them can be removed (we will be using a cutter).

The other pic is of a load of tins we had no idea what was in them, but were curious as it had come from Lake Boga RAAF (home to the PBY Catalina in ww2). Turned the tins around today and they are tins of Night Camo paint :-)

Also found a number of tins that on closer inspection are original blue and red colours for roundels. Had to stop due to bad weather but looking forward to more adventures on the weekend !

Very Impressive Bellarine--Thanks for Sharing.

Hi Bellarine,
Thanks for sharing. What an amazing collection of parts.

Will contact my friend who has AP 1086 Sections, but not sure if his go back to WW2.

Those Hydraulic Pipes "Sleeves", or "connectors" are Imperial AGS items and I've seen em used on Pipe to Components Unions, many years ago, they slide into end of pipeflare and are the go between or Joint sealer. Later "Sleeves" were a more positive fit with a sort of tail that went into pipe. So these "Sleeves" you have certainly are WW2 period. Somebody re- building Imperial Hydraulic Systems for WW2 or later Aircraft will require these, hope they get to a good home, as I'm sure you do.

Keep the info coming, guys in here will identify everything for you, ( They love a challenge) and other folks love to read about it.

Many thanks for that - appreciate any help :-)

All of the parts were bought at the end of the war in large surplus auctions, and from my research the main buyers were grandad, Hudsons' Stores and Hughes. Some of the quantities I found in the shed were pretty large

The wheels have been identified tonight as Beaufighter, which is not a bad thing. Storing them in my one car garage with all the other stuff however is not such a good thing !!!!

Info !!

Hi Bellarine,
Friend will PM you, as generally, the AP 1086 is huge and would have been amended down the years taking out WW2 stuff. Although he has no 1086 info going back to WW2 he can probably point you in some directions, he only really has the later Section 6, ( Instruments ) some of which might help you. do you know the specific RAF Sections, ( eg:- 27A --or 5C ) that you need info on?

Nice one on the Beaufighter wheels.--------- unobtanium hens teeth !!!

Cheers M8, keep digging---------lol !!!

Hey Bill

Many thanks - the main sections I am interested in are the volumes with part numbers beginning with 5 and 6, which accounts for most of the stuff I have recovered. Few other bits n pieces which I have worked out over time, mainly radio oriented.

Cheers

Can anybody explain how or why some poster have a "Send private message" in the block to the left of the message see Aircraft Clock's message three above, and others don't, eg; Robert Fraser's message two above? Or mine I suppose. How can we enable private messaging?

In 11 years and 6 months I seem to have posted 391 times (it says)! So there must be something more to it, though who knows with this 'new' forum.
