Is this smoke coming from the oil filler/breather?

The smoke seems to be emitting from the bottom of the engine block, near to the exhaust manifold. A gasket maybe??

You might just be lucky and find the oil filter lose.
When was this last changed, If recently then may not have been tightened correctly. If not changed for a long while may have developed a leak. Had it happen to me once, started as a pin prick and slowly got bigger. Had to do an emergency repair, till I got a new one. used an old baked bean tin and jammed it over to top of the old filter. :D

What sort of car and engine is it; and how many miles are on it?

The engine around the exhaust manifold is usually hot enough to produce white or grey smoke from small quantities of leaking oil, diesel or antifreeze. If the engine temperature is reading normal the engine block is probably always that hot; it just seems hotter now you’ve noticed the smoke!

Thanks for the ideas guys. Havnt had a chance to look at it today as it was too dark after I finished work.

Due to extremely cold weather recently could the Thermostat be "Frozen" in the closed position therefore stopping the coolant flowing around the engine? Just a thought I had today!

The car is a 1996 Toyota Carina E 1.6 Petrol, 85,000 miles. Its our old admin car!
