He was quite a character.
He was the nephew of Wilfred Pickles,who you're probably not old enough to remember.

My God, that's going back a bit. I used to enjoy listening to Wilf on the radio. Can't remember his wife's name though, nor the name of his program. Can you?

My 94 y.o. mother says it was "Have a Go" and I have to agree. How did the theme song go ' 'ave a go, Joe, you gotta 'ave a go', etc etc.

And the phrase was "Give him the money, Barney".

...and Violet Carson played the piano on Wilfred's show! - regrettably I remember it only too well!! Pickles' daughter is Carolyn Pickles, the actress and I think his sister is also an actress.

No, you are both right. Wilfred said "......Barney" originally because Barney Colehan was the show's producer. Later when his wife Mabel joined the show it became ....Mabel".
