Mr Soggy - Just to let you know, the BGA issued us a Certificate of Airworthiness last week so I test flew Swallow BZL today - very nice too, even in non-soaring conditions. It's been a while since I last flew a glider with a decent rate of roll!

I'll PM a couple of pictures.

Do you by any chance have a colour photo of the glider showing the Wills logo on the fin? I'd like to reproduce it

a) Because of historical correctness

b) Because of its present-day political incorrectness! :D

cheers
Dave

Dave

That's wonderful news, and well done to you and all concerned, fair warms my heart it do.

I have no more images of my own, but found this one on the Vintage Gliding Facebook page, which is unfortunately indistinct and remote, but does show the Wills logo. I readily admit to having no permission to publish this, so I apologise to the owner who I hope may be not upset in view of the purpose.

Thank you for the photoes of her firet flight after restoration, which are an absolute delight to me:

Soggy - many thanks for the photo. Googling WD & HO Wills produces a "History of WD & HO Wills" apparently by Dave Napier if the URL is correct. That shows a logo comprising a stylised diamond shaped tobacco leaf superimposed on a large W, all in gold. It certainly resembles the logo on the fin in the photo. If you have the time can you have a look at that website & let me know if it jogs a memory or two?

If it's the one, then your photo gives the size and position, which is great. And the rudder needs to be blue?

Well done Dave, the plan worked out then! Oh and thank you for the Skylark Canopy, I picked it up a few weeks ago - the great Skylark rebuild doth continue!

That Wills gold-leaf logo is the very thing, although I must admit my memory fails me as to whether it was gold or blue, but gold I think.

The rudder was indeed blue as seen in the 'Capstan' image (for which thanks to al stacey). However, I don't recall the 'day glow' stripes on the nose in her early days at Perranporth. Perhaps light blue and white not the best colour scheme for visibility and the day glow stripes were considered expedient.

I hope another image of BZL is on its way which will help with logo positioning, so keep an eye on here and your PM box Dave.

Another image at Aboyne, with thanks to Al for this. It looks like the logo was blue after all, Dave.

Was that the one that started it's flying life at Camphill?

Soggy - thanks for that - there's a B&W photo at Feshie showing what turn out to be the hi-vis triangles but they must have been lost during the 1980's re-fabric.

Think I'd prefer the logo in gold! But were the under-wing Wills logos original?

Boguing - No it's the other WD & HO Wills Swallow which was won by the Cornish Gliding Club at Perranporth (see my earlier thread titled "Mr Soggy - Cornish Gliding Club")

Thanks Astir 8.

Does the other one still exist - I know that it did get a bit bent after an away landing?

Under-wing roundels, Dave, I am sure they would have been original, but can't remember whether they were also on the top surfaces. I should imagine so, wouldn't have roundels just underneath I'm sure.

BZL

Hi Chaps,
What a lovely surprise to see BZL in the air after all these years. This was the first aircraft I soloed in and regrettably the first and only (so far) aircraft I have damaged in 6000 hours private and commercial flying, and I was n't even sat in it!
Nice to see Phil Hawkey is still around. I was at Perranporth for 18 months whilst at college in Cornwall but left to move on to employment.
The damage I did was to the underside of the port wing near the wing root in the ply box section. Just the far side of the tupperware box on the photo on the other BZL swallow thread. I took off the canopy for the pilot (female) and stood the canopy on its front edge. The swallow was parked with its left wing on the ground and as the pilot climbed in,the plane rocked forward onto the skid and the left wing came down onto the rear left hand edge of the canopy frame and punched a neat hole in the ply skin. I was n't popular with the early solo pilots that day! Watch out for that one Astir8!!
Re the Wills transfers I remember them as blue on the white of the vertical tail surfaces and white roundels with the same blue transfers under the wings only. The red stripes are a later addition after 1972.
I may have a photo from that time but finding it will be a challenge so do n't expect an early result, it is 40 years ago!
May I also say thanks to everyone involved in getting BZL back where she belongs in the air again.

Regards,

PhilC

B*****, just had 4 Wills stickers made in gold! Thanks very much for the information though.

P.S. I didn't find any signs of your damage during the CofA , so the repair must have been good.

cheers

Hi Dave,
The engineer Pete Arthur repaired it by cutting out the damaged ply and splicing in a 3 inch square piece of ply. The repair was left primed for a while just to make me squirm I think. Will let you know if I find any photos.

All the best

perranporth photos

Hi Dave,
Hope you are having fun in BZL this lousy summer. I have PMed you to advise I have found two poor quality views of BZL at Perranporth. The prints are contact prints of the negative so the scan quality is poor. Email me if you want a copy of these (address on PM )

Phil

sorry for the delay in replying. I was overseas earning a living for 7 weeks. PM has been sent. I'll be grateful for any early photos of BZL for the archive.

Last weekend I had 1 1/2 hours in her on the ridge at Feshie. Kept up reasonably OK with the glass gliders by flying slower and closer to the ridge!:D

BZL EARS

Hi Dave,
Your ridge flight sounded great in BZL. A thought struck me recently and Mr Soggy may be able to confirm this. You mentioned in an earlier message about the missing "ears" on the detachable canopy. Now I heard from someone at the time that the "ears" reduced the cruising sink rate by over a knot by improving the airflow at the wing roots.
I did nt get your pm so if you pm your email address again I will forward the photos.

PhilC

Perrannporth Swallow

I seem to recall that one 'Noel Ellis' was one of the reasons that Perranporth 'won' the Sallow.
He was still to be seen at the airfield on the odd wednesdays when some of the former GC members meet for lunch.
That was when 'lunch' was available in the Control Tower !!!
Do you have a contact for him Phil he would be pleased to see you. PC

Mr Soggy and friends

as another aside I was contacted recently by a researcher for the company making the James May "Toy Story" series. He was asking permission to possibly use the photo of BZL landing in one of the programmes. I don't know what connection Mr May has with a Swallow (anyone know?) but it will be interesting to watch out for the said programme.

Boguing - No it's the other WD & HO Wills Swallow which was won by the Cornish Gliding Club at Perranporth (see my earlier thread titled "Mr Soggy - Cornish Gliding Club")

A little Swallow side history. The Camphill WD&HOW Swallow was 'landed out' by the Father of my friend Graham. Bit of damage. Graham went on to become 'Jilted John' and 'Ken Shuttleworth'.

Not a lot of people know that.
