Notes on De Havilland part numbers (posted by AgCat):

It was not the norm for de Havilland to prefix part numbers with the letters DH. In the early years of Stag Lane design all drawings were numbered in a single numerical sequence. This covered types such as the DH 60 series, through to the Tiger Moth (DH 82) and Fox Moth (DH 83) etc. From memory, I think it was perhaps the Dragon (DH 84) which introduced a model designator in the drawing number but I would have to check if that is correct. Thus, the first element of the drawing (or part) number denoted the model, followed either by the drawing number or (for later types) a system designator and then a drawing number.

Thus, the configuration of de Havilland part numbers for the Chipmunk is C1-TP-313. This number denotes a Chipmunk part (C1) for the tailplane (TP). Other systems were denoted by letters such as CF (Controls, flap) and FS (fuselage, structure). Part numbers for the Dove and Devon start 104, the Heron 114, the Trident 121 etc. Strangely, de Havilland used to 'pick and mix' its parts and bits with Dove part numbers are still used on the Nimrod MRA4!

The early single numerical sequence of de Havilland drawings covered all types from the DH 60 to the DH 89 EXCEPT the DH 87.

For the DH 87 each part was designated by a three-digit prefix comprising a single digit followed by the Type number. The first digit was used to denote the location with the aircraft the part could be found. This system gave a much wider range of possible part numbers as the complexity of aircraft increased. The designation system for the DH 87 Hornet Moth followed this sequence:

187*** Fuselage
287*** Planes
387*** Electrics
487*** Empennage
587*** Undercarriage
687*** Engine installation
787*** Flying controls
887*** Instruments
987*** Miscellaneous

At a late stage of Dragon Rapide/Dominie development the drawing sequence 989*** was introduced for parts used mainly in the various radio fits applied to the aircraft.

For the DH 90 to 93 inclusive, the same numerical designation system as for the DH 87 was used; ie;

190*** + 191*** + 192*** + 193*** - fuselage parts for the respective type. In some cases a 'zero' designator was used (ie 091***) for general arrangement drawings etc.

With the DH 94 the same system of designating part numbers by the aircraft type and its location on the aircraft was used but instead of using a single digit prefix to the type number, a letter suffix was used. For example:

94A*** General
94C*** Controls
94E*** Engine installation
94******* Fuselage
94N*** Instruents/electrics
94P*** Petrol and oil
94T*** Tailplane
94U*** Undercarriage
94W*** Wings

This system then continued on subsequent aircraft types, with the letters after the type number being used more widely to discriminate between aircraft system; eg, on the Chipmunk:

C1-C******* Controls, flaps
C1-FS*** Fuselage, structure

As well as the type-specific drawing series, de Havilland used other generic designations:

DHA and DHS - used to denote de Havilland standard parts or processes applicable to more than one aircraft type.
J - used for standard material sections used across all types.
R - used for Repair drawings. For the early types using the original all-numeric drawing series the repair drawings were mixed up in a single R-series. Later models included R as a prefix to a number allocated in the normal drawing sequence; eg, from the Chipmunk RC1-FS*** would be a repair drawing for damage to the fuselage structure. As a slight complication, some repair drawings were prefixed RD - repair drawing - rather than R, as if the system was not complex enough already.

Notes on the CAC Wirraway, Wackett, Boomerang series of aircraft (Posted by Mark Pilkington):

The Wirraway has a number of models built from CA-1 through to CA-16 and carries part numbers originating from the NA-16 as well, resulting in part numbers of:

19- (NA-16)
01- CA-1 Wirraway mark 1
03- CA-3 " "
05- CA-5 " "
07- CA-7 Wirraway mark 11
08- CA-8 " "
09- CA-9 " "
16- CA-16 Wirraway mark 111

10- CA-10 Divebomber wings and centre-sections (fitted retrospectively to existing aircraft and in production to CA-16 aircraft)

All subsequent Wirraways carry a mixture of parts inherited from the earlier models where parts have been upgraded or added, ie a CA-16 may still carry many CA-1 parts etc if they have not subsequently been upgraded in design.

The 02- part numbers do not relate Wirraways at all as the CA-2 is the Wackett Trainer prototypes.

The 03- part numbers do not relate to Wacketts at all as the CA-3 is a Wirraway model, and the production Wacketts are the CA-6.

02- Wackett Trainer Prototype
06- Wackett Trainer production trainer (which carry the odd 02- part)

12- and 13- are Boomerang parts relating to the CA-12 and CA-13 Boomerang, as well as the CA-19 Boomerang, the latter two types had many CA-12 parts as the 13- and 19- part numbers only related to those parts that changed between the models.

12- CA-12 Boomerang production fighter
13- CA-13 Boomerang production fighter
14- CA-14 and CA-14A Boomerang turbocharged Prototype
19- CA-19 Boomerang production fighter

Note that the 19- Boomerang parts are drawn as CAC drawings and are not with 19- parts in the early Wirraways based on NA drawings from NA-16, the parts do not identify themselves as CAC or NA, however the historical drawing sets previously held by CAC/HdeHV clearly contained North American drawings for the Wirraways 19- parts ,and these are identical to the equivalent parts in many of the later NA products including the T-6 and SNJ deriviatives, despite carrying later 88- etc numbers in the NA number blocks.

obviously other CAC parts numbers are:

04- CA-4 Woomera prototype
11- CA-11 Wommera production Bomber
15- CA-15 "Kangaroo"? prototype
22- CA-22 Winjeel Prototype
25- CA-25 Winjeel Production Trainer
26- CA-26 Avon Sabre Prototype
27- CA-27 Avon Sabre production fighter
28- CA-28 Ceres Cropduster

This CAC model number information is all largely available in books such as the Stewart Wilson series on the CAC aircraft in RAAF service and there is a strong correlation between aircraft model and part number prefix.

CAC largely duplicated the North American numbering system with the initial number 01-, 16- indicating the model of aircraft (or more correctly production run block) while the next numbers formed a group of parts all related to the same elements of structure:

ie

xx-10xxx in General Assembly drawings
xx-13xxx is wing Centre Section
xx-14xxx is wing outer panel
xx-21xxx is horizontal stabiliser
xx-22xxx is elevator
xx-23xxx is fin (vertical stabiliser)
xx-24xxx is rudder
xx-33xxx landing gear
xx-40xxx power plant
xx-51xxx Instrumentation

This is consistant across Wirraway, Boomerang and Wackett drawing indexes that I hold and referenced for this post

It is also consistant within the North American T6G drawing index that I also hold, which is full of earlier T6 production run parts such as:

36-
49-
52-
55-
66-
77-
88-
121-
168-
182-

as well as very early parts inherited from the NA-16 design including

The DH thing is slightly out - on Mossie, the Letter is a prefix - ie L98 is a part of the engine system. Vampire is (eg) A00, but after Vampire it changes to the system shown for the Chipmunk.

Venom and subsequent Vampires can be a mix of the two.

Hi Elliott

Happy New Year.

Jaguar Part Nos are not Type M etc (M was the french maritime version only)

Part Nos found are as follows but were not limited to the aircraft types eg 121E could be found on RAF single seaters :rolleyes:

121A - French Strike
121B - British Trainer
121E - French Trainer
121S - British Strike

121O - Used to find these numbers on Pylons
Numbers also seen 121Q and 121X although I've never seen a specific reason for their allocation.

To add a bit of early stuff to the list "as well as a little confusion :diablo:".

Parts for early Bristol aircraft "F2b, Bulldog etc" tended to have numbers stamped into them that had an "F" prefix eg- F3676, Bristol inspection stamps started with BA eg- BA9, some Bristol standard parts had an "SD" prefix eg- SD314.

A lot of late WW1 types had some parts that started with the prefix "AD" eg- AD4634, these were parts made to Air Department drawings, some of these parts were identical to the original manufacturers drawings, which must have made things a little confusing to say the least "2 different part numbers for the same part", no idea as to why they did it though :confused:.

BA with a 2-bladed prop vertically between the letters = Blackburn Aircraft.

I've also got LA with an identical prop, but no idea whose mark it is because it was on a part found in an airfield scrap dump.

We are investigation a Wellington wreck which lies in shallow water. The Wellingon is notoriously difficult to find an identity. It does have the later type of tailwheel, but we try to find out what factory built it.

Does anyone know if the letter Y could be a link? (BY and ZY have been found amont the many numbers).

Also a stamp showing a circle with the letters

N
O
R

vertical like above, any clue to what factory it used this stamp?

Cheers

Here's one... I have a fuse board with the following info on the back:

s/no. DHB 33
25NF5365a mod 255776
2. Z/FW

The board is a cockpit mounted type, in grey paint. It includes a series of circuit breakers in rows of threes and fours down the left hand side, and screw type fuse holders over the rest of the surface. Amongst the systems are ADFs, weather radar, cockpit speakers, cabin speakers and cabin intercom.

What is it from? I'd hazard a guess at Comet, but the part number doesn't tie in with the Comet prefix. Following the DeHavilland system, all I can glean from the information is that it was made at Broughton and is electrical / instrumentation....

New and improved with updates from the last thread. Please feel free to add any stamps/suggest any improvements...
**********************************************************

Aircraft Part Codes:

PD = Battle
PC = Battle
PA = Battle
156 = Beaufighter Mk1F
152 = Beaufort
126 = Beaufort DAP
192 = Belvedere (Westland)
B101 = Beverley (Blackburn) C1
555 = Bison
142M = Blenheim Mk IF
149 = Blenheim Mk Ib
160 = Blenheim Mk V
130A = Bombay

While looking through the parts list above for a CV prefix to identify an apparant pre-war british aluminium aircraft seat (http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=117836) I saw the reference above suggesting the parts number prefix for Australian DAP Beauforts is 126- rather than 152- .

I have had the opportunity to look at a lot of DAP Beaufort parts including A9-13 - Mark V (Admittedly assumed to be assembled from 1 of the 20 sets of UK built parts set out to support the Australian production) but also the cockpits of A9-150 - mark VII and A9-210 - mark VIII and the fuselage sections of A9-230 mark VIII and A9-501 mark VIII and numerous wings and parts from other anonomous DAP Beauforts and all have carried the "152-" part number prefix.

I'm not sure who provided the advice of "126-" being associated with Beauforts and it might well relate to a part from a Beaufort, but that part might be a third party supplied furnishing from different origin rather than the structure to Bristol design and DAP construction.

I had wondered if (like the CAC and NA family of aircraft) that the Beaufort design might be carrying a few parts effectively passed down from the earlier Blenheim design and therefore still carrying its type number? but that is either 142-, 149-, or 160- according to the list above and I cannot find any reference to a Bristol Type 126 ever getting off the drawing board?

A Bristol Type 126 would sit somewhere between the last Bristol biplane design, the Type 123 of 1934, and the Bristol Bombay Type 130 of 1935.

I would therefore propose the "126 = Beaufort DAP" reference be removed and the list be adjusted to:

152 = Beaufort (Bristol and DAP)

The excellent list of manufacturers codes in the first post by Whitley Project must be of great use to researchers.

There seems to be one notable omission - Metropolitan Vickers, Trafford Park.

Does anyone have the information as to what their code/stamps were?
