I was reading about this incident t'other day over on pprune, there was some less than complimentary things being said about Centurion not to mention the usual 'MD-11 is crap/dangerous/marvellous/flawed/ground it routine...

Very sad to see such a nice looking aircraft in that condition. :(

Yet ANOTHER MD-11 landing incident.....the crew were extremely fortunate the wing did not break off, causing the airplane to roll 180 degrees and slide down the runway upside down, as has happened in other accidents, with the inevitable fireball.

This accident scenario seems to be playing out again and again, its hard to escape the conclusion that accidents of this type will continue until the aircraft type is retired. IMHO the design is fatally flawed.

From the pictures I have seen this looks like a failure of the main undercarriage leg and may not have been as a result of a heavy landing, as we have seen in some of the other landing accidents involving the MD11.
Of course it still adds to the accident toll of the MD11 but may not be related to the others. A shame as I think the DC10 and MD11 have a lot of good points.

As can be seen in the following photo, the MLG leg has failed, a hard landing may have been a contributory factor but, it could aso be fatigue, manufacturing flaw, poor maintenance etc, etc As far as i know this is the only incident involving an MD-11 where the MLG has actually failed? In other incidents/accidents the MD-11 landing gear appears to be almost indestructible! The FedEx crash at Narita was a prime example, that nose gear took some enormous punishment. Ones things for sure, it won't stop the MD-11 haters pouring on the scorn...
