W -Bob, the formation was known as the `Green Barrows`; I flew #4,tanker; ..Syc.
Twinblade; The vortices are formed by the production of `lift` on the wings ,mainly ,but you can see it elsewhere,on Hornets/F-14s,etc. On a wing-tip there is reduced pressure on the upper wing ,and increased pressure on the lower surface, which tends to flow outwards ,tending to cause a `swirl around the tip.If the aircraft is pulling lots of `G` then lots of lift is produced ,and any moisture in the air rapidly cools to visible vapour,as in the picture. It also is a visible indication of `induced drag`,and is why most modern airliners have `winglets` to reduce the effects of induced drag. Not usually fitted on combat aircraft as such ,because wingtips usually carry missiles, which have a `similar` effect.

Under stress + certain lighting conditions, and otherwise smooth surface can look like utter poop.
Seen it in birds from every nation.
Modern warships on an unrelated note also look like wet paper under some lighting.
