Looks like they tried to get at the guns with a can opener!
I fail to understand why every little panel has to be damaged in their treasure hunt. What's the story around the oil tank panel in front of the windscreen?
Perhaps they thought the pilot was trying to smuggle out some antiquities when he ran out of fuel? Muppets.

Interesting info..
Hi all;
This very interesting bit of info was posted by Terry McGrady over on Hyperscale;
"On 28/6/42 ET574 Piloted by F/Sgt DCH Copping 785025 left 260 for a ferry flight to an RSU . The A/C flew with u/c locked down due to damage . An incorrect course was set and the A/C was thought to have crashed in the Desert due to fuel exhaustion.
F/Sgt Copping is listed as missing on that date
Now I'm not saying this is the A/C , just that it MIGHT be, in view of :-
a) there being no apparent signs of Battle damage
b) the fact that the U/C was wiped off in the crash"

The elevator looks like it has flak damage. Nevertheless, that at least tallies with the physical evidence so shouldn't be dismissed.

Sadly, Flt Sgt Copping didn't make it. He came from Southend-on-Sea and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial. If that is indeed his aircraft, it needs to be treated with a lot more respect than it's getting ...

Interesting indeed; particularly considering the wheels-down landing in possibly unsuitable terrain.

Couldn’t it have flown with existing ‘flak damage’ on this ferry flight?

I think what will determine what restoration this aircraft gets is the size of the cheque!

Also 'Stocky' Edwards story book is free for Kindle and also on line if you look hard enough.
Think I posted a link way back either on here or WIX
Has book carries a diary, loses, claims, missing, killed etc etc.
Don't you just love google and the internet.
Some other good news, but yourself (Bruce) and Paul already know that.:)
Mark

Looks like battle damage on the aircraft to me, but there may be a different cause.
