Hi all

I am toying with the idea of doing the malta Air rally routing via Corsica/Sardinia/Sicily and would be grateful for nay and all advice at this stage with regard to planning. What is suggested as the best maps to use? I am thinking in terms of 1/2 mill covering France etc but after that would be grateful for any thoughts also where such charts can be obtained.

Many thanks

If you want a consistent chart format for the whole route, then Jepps would be the way to go (assuming this is a VFR trip). Sadly, they are discontinuing this series on paper, but current editions may still be available.

Peter Mundy's shop at Lelystad has a good stock of European charts and a good mail order service.

The Eurocontrol EAD site is free to register and will give you access to AIP, AICs etc for all Europe.

Skyvector seems very popular as an EFB alternative, but I have no personal experience.

Do you plan to cross the Alps? If so, an early morning crossing usually works best.

Through Italy, it will pay to phone airfields in advance to ensure fuel availability. You can't trust the AIP and Notams to be accurate in that respect.

It should be a great trip. Have fun!

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

The reason for planning to go Corsica / Sardinia is to avoid Italy and the problems therein!!

As I recall fuel on the islands is eye-wateringly expensive.

I tried to get to Venice last month but was stumped by mechanical issues at Avignon. I have done mainland Italy three times and have never had any great problems, despite the reputation of Italian ATC for being difficult

Charts? I don't really bother buying them these days, though I do have a French 1 mill from 2012 (Don't forget the half-mill is only valid below 5,000ft). Mostly I just print out the charts from my SkyDemon route.

Many thanks for that, usually anything on an island is expensive because it has to be shipped in, many thanks for your other suggestions !
