It makes sense to do a short haul first, BA has to get the plane in service and making money, this will be a good shake down flight, I wonder how many passengers will be on board. Not many I guess which will proberbly be a good thing.

BA must be keen to get it on long haul, but nice to see they are doing 'test' flights with passengers before they commit to long haul. Get the first long haul wrong and that would be a PR disaster.

Comet Prototype lifting off for the first time = Historic moment
Boeing 747 first flight = Historic moment
A380 first flight = Historic moment

One of many A380s taking first scheduled flight when many are currently in the air or in service = Ordinary aviation day.

Memorable day for BA fans perhaps, historic? No.
People will not be talking about the first scheduled BA A380 flight in 50 years time!

Gosh, you forgot to include Concorde...now that was a truly historic moment!;)

I agree with you though that the day of the first revenue passenger flight is in fact a bit of a non-event thesedays...(what else are they going to do with it...just sit and look/marvel at it?!).

Perhaps the day that BA's first A380 arrived into LHR and when the first long-haul flight departs (that's what it's main purpose is!) could be considered as "special", but no-way near as "historic" as other events.

To be honest (and I'm going to be biased here because I work at LHR!)...the A380 is getting somewhat, dare I say, boring!

Indeed, not 'historic' but interesting. I happened to be at White Waltham airfield to-day when a BA A380 came over en route from Frankfurt
Actually I was there to see the 'Biggles' replica aircraft come through to participate in the Cody statue unveiling at Farnborough. Fog at Sywell prevented it taking part - shame.
