I am already enjoying this thread. It is quite frustrating to pass quite regularly, knowing what is there and never seeing anything.

The C54 was looking good in the sun today.

The Air Atlantique Historic Flight Venom, G-DHVM, was out on the apron too, waiting to be ferried back to Coventry.

The flight was delayed a bit by bad weather at Coventry, which prevented the pilot getting got North Weald in the morning. Nevertheless we were treated to a great cartridge start of the Ghost engine.

The take off on Runway 02 was impressive!

We also got a rather nice low pass as it departed to do a practice display at Duxford on its way back to Coventry.

What's with the modern font used for WR470"?

A legacy from a previous owner who didn`t consult the roundel police.
Nice to see it finally go home after extensive engine work by Weald Aviation

That is a stunning Venom, is it an ex Swiss machine? The reason I ask is that if it is the std nose looks great back on her. I believe the guys operating the new one here in NZ decided not to change the nose as it was a very big job....not just as easy as bolting a 'rounded' one on apparently. Not that I am complaining, its still great to see her flying here!

Thanks for the pics

It is as easy as bolting a round one on. As long as you aren't using the Swiss radar boxes, it's a case of removing the radio mounting frame , fitting a new one to take the up lock switches, and fit the new nose. Might need a bit of weight upfront, but that is all.

Is that a Hunter I see lurking in the Hangar in the 5th Venom pic?

fantastic thread this what a good idea ... only went to the fighter meet once 96 i think sponsored by the daily mail if i remember have the programme somewhere didn't the Mossie win a trophy at the show (best restoration/display) or something like that if my memory is right ?? One question though how far away would the market be as the lady could shop and have retail therapy whilst i drooled over historic aircraft, can you walk around and see inside open doors of hangers or is it all pretty well ristricted to standing at the side of the runway please.

I believe you are correct that the Mosquito won the best display award. Sadly, this was only about one month before the aircraft and crew were lost.

Here's a video I took of the North Weald display.

To answer, The market is on the area used as a live pan on airshow days, my last recollection was the organisers would have to pay Epping council 21k in lost earnings on the Saturday as Market and airshow would be a no no due to parking and safety issues, the hangars are the other side of the airfield so no nosing in althought they used to do London bus tours to the liveside before the show started.

Ok thanks TA kind of answers my question ........ I guess what i was on about was on a normal Saturday (no airshows) can one see aviation activities as seen on here if the wife was dropped at the market and i wandered of (not live side) peir inside the hangers if open ?

You could drop your wife off at the Market and continue round to visit either of the two cafés on the active side – The Wings Café is in one of the old Hangar 4 offices, or carry on round to The Squadron. Both are signposted. The hangars have private operators, who don't encourage people wandering round for obvious reasons. You can sit outside both cafés and watch the aircraft movements. Another site people use is the S1 Crash Gate in the Market car park, where you get good views of the aircraft taking off, landing and taxying. If we are not too busy, we may be able to fit in a visit to the Tower. Ask at the Ops Office.
