Military aircraft Insignia of the World - John Cochrane/Stewart
Crecy Publications
GBP 14.95
Pp 142

Books on aircraft roundels are very rare - almost none in the last 15 years .Hence this is a real labour of passion and it has taken almost 15 years since the publication of the first edition with the same name and by the same authors by Airlife - for a publisher to finally release an update on this exotic subject.

If ever you wondered on all the historical roundels for a particular country and where could you look it up - this is the one book which has it all.

Its In glorious full colour - and comprises around 142 Pp (the authors originally planned a detailed 2 volume which Crecy compressed into a single volume but the above cover is not fully correct as its no longer A-K - depicts all the latest roundels for all the countries including all the notable historical roundels for countries which no longer exist like Katanga , Biafra etc approx 500 + in all - the opening description of Afghanistan with around 9 historical roundels and a 2 Page history sets up a nice opening.

The new roundels include Abkhazia, Iraqi Air Force ,Chad ,Afghanistan etc - lots of new roundels are added .

However instead of diagrams and artwork profiles as in the earlier edition by Airlife - the updated edition features instead colour pictures (some are very tiny and unclear) - and the book loses one star as the diagrams in the previous edition also depicted the fin flashes which is missing and a real disappointment for me and i will need to retain the first edition due to the diagrams.

For some of the countries like South Sudan and Kurdistan , the authors state that the national flag is used - would have been appropriate to display the flag instead of keeping it blank . Another comment is that for all the roundels currently in service , the entry date is omitted .

- Most of the text also could have done with an update from the first edition (example for India) and some of the navy roundels are also missing again .Some countries like Afghanistan, italy and Turkey are covered more comprehensively than others - though from personal research and i think there are more historical roundels for Bulgaria than shown.

i think the book could have done with another 50 Pp if the publisher had done more justice included more photographs or artwork profiles and the authors included diagrams to show the fin flashes . Also it should have been published in a bigger size like the first edition done by Airlife - nevertheless i am quite excited as its a long awaited update on this esoteric topic and a must buy.

What is confusing you? With the roundels on the wing: On the Chad roundel the blue part is facing the fuselage, on the Czech roundel, the blue is facing forward. Always! So There is a difference.

But for something different: Algeria

Have you seen other aircrafts than the Su-25 with "Czech-like" roundels ?

Nothing to do with pre delivery markings. This RAF Hawk T1 was painted, along with a dozen others, to represent the countries then flying the Hawk, think it was Farnborough 2004, probably to celebrate the thirty anniversary of Hawks first flight

Thanks for info. It would have been better if more real markings were applied.

No, and I don't think there are any others flying with it. But it is Chad alright, the reason why it's different ... maybe we will never know.

It's like the Ukraine L-39 with the Maltesian cross on it. Why was that for?

I checked the book - it shows the czech style roundel for Chad as we have seen on the Su 25 pcitures in Tom Cooper's African Migs Vol as well

The L-39 with the Malta -like cross as roundel
Many answers are given but why it is standing there with other Ukraine L-39s never was cleared. Well as in the first posting it was said to be Ukraine. And now I found this pic: Not completely the same but it has a sort of the Malta cross.

Not completely the same but it has a sort of the Malta cross.

Maltese cross is very particular, with four elements in "V" forms, joined to each other by their bases and, then, is eight-pointed.
Or engineer who wanted to paint the cross of the Ukrainian Air Force did not consult wiki. :)
