Probably painted upside down by a too soaked "happy hooligan".

The roundel of the USA as we know it today was introduced in 1947 by all 5 branches of the DOD,; USAF, USN, USMC, US Army and USCG examples shown here:

We can see small changes to the roundels size and appearance during the Vietnam war period until nowadays on combat aircraft as shown here on a B-52

[ATTACH=CONFIG]229745[/ATTACH] Camouflaged aircraft with large roundels
[ATTACH=CONFIG]229746[/ATTACH] Camouflaged aircraft with (very) small roundels
[ATTACH=CONFIG]229747[/ATTACH] Gray aircraft with toned down or low visibility roundels

The full color roundel is still in use on non combat aircraft but lets see what variation there are/were with the toned down versions in the next post.
