Does anyone know the history of the mark IX Spitfire MA298 that is on display in Denmark. I can`t find any reference to it in Morgan and Shackladys` Spitfire-The History.
Regards, Ed.

Allocated to 234 Squadron on 14/07/43.

Transferred to Fighter Leaders' School on 18/03/44.

Stored at 29MU, High Ercall, from June 1945-October 1946, when it went to Vickers-Armstrong for possible overseas sale. September 1947, allocated to 6MU at Brize Norton, and then dismantled and shipped to Denmark in November that year.

Used as an instructional airframe only in Denmark, restored and painted as 41-401 in 1953, spent time in storage and at Egeskov Veteranmuseum before ending up at Danmarks Flymuseum in 1998 where it is today. Never wore Danish markings prior to restoration, was presumably chosen for preservation because it was in a much better condition than any of other remaining Spitfires in Denmark (source: milfly.dk).

This aircraft has never been or marked as NH417 of the RAF.

Long before the current interest and communication infrastructure, the 1950's, this training airframe was set aside for preservation and painted as 41-401 and stored.

When it emerged in the 1960's the assumption was that it was the original 401 and thus 'NH417'. That said the construction number in the cockpit did appear to be substantially out of sequence but this sometimes does happen.

It was not until 1998 that a restoration team including Per Thorup Pedersen, who provided this image, started to remove the layer of preservative from the firewall that the true identity MA298/6462M was revealed with its link to the Danish training airframe FMSm4.
