-is anyone worth that obscene amount of money for kicking a ball of wind around for 90 mins?.
No.
But when idiots will pay seriously large amounts of money to watch 22 such chaps chasing a ball around a field, or mount one of Murdoch's woks on the outside of their house to do so, then that's what you get.
Probably better than Lions v Chriustians I guess?
Much the same goes for Hamilton and his ilk, though I must say he seems a better ambassador for the UK.

-Footballers should be paid according to results.
There would be a few destitute players about if they were.

I can think of some who would enjoy that for holiday viewing. :)

-Only a few weeks ago, a complaint about money paid to certain executives drew the response that to get the best you have to pay the best wages. This apparently only applies to office staff, and not the working-class serf whose only skill is to be able to apply a curved surface (forehead or toecap) to another curved surface (ball) and get it to go exactly in the right direction.
A man can sit in an office, and, at the stroke of a pen, refuse a loan to a company, throwing people out of work, until he finally retires, and it's perfectly fine that he should be paid millions, including bonuses, while it isn't fair for someone whose skills will fade at 35-40, when he becomes surplus and unemployable. There aren't many bank managers, or BBC newsreaders who risk having their career ended by a boot on the shin, either.
Footballers don't only kick a ball around for 90 minutes, they also spend hours on a training field, in all weathers, honing their abilities in the hope of, one day, getting the chance to perform at the highest level. £300,00, for playing in front of, and entertaining, 100,000 spectators, means they are being paid £3 for each one.
They also do get paid by results; if they slow down, through age, they're dropped, then sold off, like lumps of meat, or just given away to other teams. Funny, isn't it, how it's always the Rooneys of this world who're held up as examples of the obscenity of footballers' wages, while those in the nether regions of the Football League, who often need a second job to make ends meet, are quietly, and deliberately, forgotten.
At times I really despair at the rampant jealousy and snobbery that is displayed in this nation.

-Dislike the game and never watch but if people are prepared to invest in the game either as sponsors or supporters it's up to them. I am really unaffected by it.

-Edgar...
What an utter load of tripe you spout, if they actually produced the end result they're striving for, namely to win the World Cup, perhaps they then might be worth the ludicrous amount they get paid now!
But when was it we actually won it last time again?
Oh yes, 1966!
50 years ago and all that money going out to these so called elite footballers, who in the end game produce absolutely sweet F A
Anyone with the abysmally poor record these British footballers of ours have had when it comes to international football to produce every 4 years, for nearly half a century absolutely nothing, should hang their heads in shame...
Money for nothing!

-I think you should remember that by far the largest proportion of the big-earning premiership footballers are the wrong nationality to be able to play for England in a World Cup.

-Hi Moggy...
Thinking about football is something that never enters into my head, although comments about how hard footballers work for the sport and still produce such bad results when on the internation pitch and still get paid the mind bending sums they get really sets the old fuse going...
Having to have footballers from another country to play in the national sport proves how sad the game has become I'm afraid...
Thanks for pointing it out though.

-December 2014 marked a significant milestone in my life. The first, and probably last, time I have ever travelled across the Channel to watch a football match!

-Ha!
So, it was you that put the knackers on the football patrons unfulfilled World Cup hopes again!
To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't even go to the back door to watch it, unless I could have, for one week only, £350,000 to produce absolutely nothing!!!

Ah, yes, when all else fails, throw out insults.
if they actually produced the end result they're striving for, namely to win the World Cup, perhaps they then might be worth the ludicrous amount they get paid now!
And you can say exactly the same about Messrs Messi, Ronaldo & Bale (tell me, when did Wales last take part in the World Cup finals, never mind win it?)
If you truly believe that the clubs pay the players small fortunes for them to go off and win the World Cup, you really need a dose of reality; they pay them to win the Premier League, in the hope that they can enter the money-spinning European Championship. As far as the club owners are concerned, the World Cup is an irrelevance, and they would have the players ignore it, if they could.

-Which neatly illustrates one of the key differences between soccer in the UK and other sports in the U.K where playing for your country is of very secondary concern for the footballer but the pinnacle of their sporting career for participants in most other sporting activities.
From what I have read above England has not won at world level for decades and is highly unlikely ever to do so.

-The widening gap in wages for workers is exemplified in Lincoln 7s example. It's the same for bankers as pointed out by Edgar. The gap has reached obscene levels, no individual needs that amount of money but that's the economic system we live in.

-Yes it is a free market. It is not a question of "need" it is a question of what the market will pay. I live on a fixed state pension with a few savings but I neither resent nor envy those who are able to attract huge salaries.
How else would you have it - controlled economy, fixed wages etc? What a grim thought.

Talking to a friend the other day, and whilst I am not interested in Football, it came up in conversation. My friend told me that Rooney received £350.000 PER WEEK. So my question is, is anyone worth that obscene amount of money for kicking a ball of wind around for 90 mins?.
Also, when a Team plays badly, why do they get rid of the Manager?, surly its the Team thats at fault.
Comments?.
Jim.
