It's OK, I'm not going mad(der!)
I just thought I should mention this. Unfortunately it was on yesterday (in Britain) but its about Jiro Hirokoshi the designer of the Zero! (And I had to read that twice to make sure!) Has anyone seen it??

I watched it — an absolute masterpiece, beautifully done in every respect. Not your normal aviation-enthusiast fare, but highly recommended.

Must look out for this. Luckily Film4 tend to repeat their films during the week.

A clip: http://www.radiotimes.com/film/crbwgr/the-wind-rises

" Horikoshi becomes an innovative designer of aircraft in the 1920s, living through some of the most turbulent times in the country's history. To his horror, his creations are put to destructive use in the Second World War"

Edit: Just checked. It's repeated on Friday 13th 6:25pm Film 4

It is a cracking film, all right. Haven't seen it in a wee while, but a repeat viewing on DVD might be called for.

I can only echo what's already been said. The depiction of aircraft, not only Japanese but Italian, Russian and German as well, is superb.

Studio Ghibli, who were responsible for The Wind Rises, also did Porco Rosso, which I've heard is also very good.

For those of us who don't know, what's the functional difference?

Anime is an art form, specifically animation, that includes all genres found in cinema, but it can be mistakenly classified as a genre. In Japan, the term anime refers to all forms of animation from around the world. English-language dictionaries define anime as a "Japanese-style animated film or television entertainment" or as "a style of animation created in Japan"

According to Wiki, anyway.

So one is a moving image story made up from drawings, and the other is a set of drawings made up into a moving image story?

Have I got that right?

That's about the long and short of it.

They have shown a number of their films on Film4. Up until now, I haven't watched any.

I'm not big on anime, but the Ghibli films seem to set the bar very high (most of them are highly regarded).

Can we change the title of the thread please? I love the talk about anything Ghibli, but calling Miyazaki's films 'cartoons' is like calling Michelin-starred food 'grub'!

I'm actually feeling a viewing of this film coming on tonight.

Has anyone seen Porco Rosso? It's meant to be really good.

This looks more likely.. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=anime

This is a good cartoon, like Michelin starred food is good grub. I wouldn't insist on Anime as opposed to cartoon - especially as it's either a Japanese misapprehension of the French phrase (dessin anime), or a shortening of the American-English word 'Animation', both used to describe.. a cartoon.

But yes. A very good cartoon!

Yes - seen Porco Rosso, and yes it's surreal, but beautiful with it. Never as good as the original pre-Disney Laputa however.

It's not a cartoon. A cartoon is a simple, exaggerated drawing. Miyazaki's work is anything but that. Please stop, those of you who are doing it, being so archly condescending.
