-I think your right John, the lengths some people will go to, to get you to part with your money, is, well, unbelieveable. I.D. Theft is a big thing also. The tinternet has a lot to answer for.

That's like saying cars have a lot to answer for because of lousy drivers. If you don't recognise a number, don't ring it back!! I have the impression that there are a good few masochists on here!:stupid:

-It's only a thought.....maybe if you'd been on a contract the call would have gone through and you would have received a ginormous bill!
Have to say, if I don't recognise the number I take the attitude that 'if it's important, they'll ring back...if not, who cares?!?'
By the way, I too hate it when my phone rings in public.

-Charlie,
I don't recognise ANY numbers !! Except perhaps for No 1. son and then it takes a moment or two for recognition to dawn.

Yes, the thought of running up a big bill did cross my mind. There is perhaps something to be said for 'pay-as-you-go' in effectively limiting one's liablity.

-Chas. re your 3. What I mean about the tinternet is there is so much information to get to know all about anyone, if your a computer whiz kid, and know where to look.

Don't you have, for example, number one son's number saved into your phone? Then, if and when he rings, your phone will display his name so you don't have to recognise the number...
...other than that, I agree with the others, if it isn't somebody you know.....don't answer.

It makes no difference. If it's important they will leave a message. If not nothing is lost. I do recognise several numbers and they are identified on my phone but anything else I leave. Same for the landline at home. Then you are never at risk from scammers.

Sure but that's just progress. We can do a great deal to protect ourselves and those who do not should blame either themselves or the crooks, not the system.

-I blame Mrs Meteor. She MADE me go onto a contract.....kept muttering something about having to pay for all my calls. Tried the 'for richer for poorer' argument, and then suggested that it was OUR money but that didn't seem to work either. Funny how it's HER car, until it needs petrol.
You're right though...I was much happier on pay as you go, it controlled my call rate very nicely because my mind was always thinking about cost. Contract can lull you somewhat. We get free calls on the landline after six pm and all day at weekends, do we use it? Nope!

-I believe the maximum amount you can be charged for making a call in this country, is about £3 per minute.

I'm not remotely a technophobe but, I do sometimes have a problem with recognising potential thus, failing to exploit all the possibilities of the system. Mrs G's diagnosis is one of bone idleness. I prefer selective time management.

-It's only a thought.....maybe if you'd been on a contract the call would have gone through and you would have received a ginormous bill!I think that's the only way to treat unrecognised numbers. It's the way I've always treated them anyway. I certainly won't lose any sleep if they don't call again.

Thanks very much for that link. Very useful. Altho' I had sufficient credit on my phone, I think that my service provider Vodafone was aware of the problem and had placed a bar.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe that is an urban myth ?

The present Mrs. G and I were sitting in an M & S cafeteria during Saturday afternoon. My mobile rang, which for me, in public, is an embarrassment, why ? I don't know. My phone is on a 'pay-as-you-go' tariff and I had about £14 of credit - I know, because I checked.
Before I could excavate it from my inside pocket, it stopped. I ran thru' the menu and rang the number. A recorded female voice told me that I did not have enough credit to make this call. I called out the number to my wife and she rang it with the same result. She too is on a pay-as-you-go and at that moment had a credit of about £7.
At this point my suspicions started to man the barricades as I detected the possibility of an attempted scam.
Does anyone have an answer ?
