-I have a new computer(one week) I understood the upgrade was free. I will wait anyway to see if there are any bugs or issues with it.

It is free for a while (18 months?) if you already have Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, after which you would need to buy it - assuming you didn't upgrade. BUT it is the last Windows since, from now on, apparently, they will update this OS so that (they say) you will never need to purchase one again.
So far all the reviews have been good.
Just wondered if anyone had taken the plunge yet.

You have seen this information where?
Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating Systems states:
We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch. This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost.

-I wonder how this works with people buying a new computer with Win.10 pre installed ?
Maybe you will be prompted for your Win.7 key ?
By: 30th July 2015 at 15:26 Permalink - Edited 1st January 1970 at 01:00
-Why? If you bought a new computer with Win 7 you didn't have to utilise your Win XP key for the OS you had on your old computer to activate Win 7 on the new machine.
The same when you went from Win 98 or ME to Win XP or Win 95 to Win 98 on a new machine.
If you bought the OS separately from hardware in the past you paid for it .
For a period you will get Win 10 for free separately from hardware. Afterwards you will have to pay for it.
You are buying new hardware with a new OS on it. Just like in the past. End of story.

-I was given a new computer by a guy who owed me so it was free. My last one was 2002 and died big style. I have been using my laptop in the mean time. I keep getting aggravating prompts to change to windows 10 popping up in the corner of my screen.

-Paul,
just find and remove the update KB3035583 from your machine and restart. This will end the automatic download and reminder.

-Recently acquired a new laptop running W8.1 and haven't had any prompts at all about W10 - wish the same could be said of the 60 day trial Norton and its repeated reminders that it is a trial.

If you are on XP or 8, then change as quickly as possible.
If you are on 7, then hang about a bit.

-Updated my Win 7 machines to Win 10. All good so far. Loved Win 7 in comparison to other Win versions, half expected to be winding back to Win 7 pdq after "upgrade" to 10.
So far nothing to complain about bar two small issues.
Start menu didn't work in my main profile, did on the other two users on the machine this is apparently a known issue, applied a code fix and that was resolved. The other concerns the background, it appears that unlike Win 7 Win 10 doesn't like to look in folders under the main folder you designate as background so it won't select pics in those underlying folders to rotate as background. Resolved that by shoving all the pics in the camera roll folder and designating that as the background.
So far so good, happy with the change.

-Just be aware, there's some spam email going around offering an upgrade. When you open the link, it downloads an encryption file, which encrypts all your documents, and demands payment to unlock them.
Not done mine yet, but will, as my W7 is getting very creaky.

-I'm reckoning if nothing untoward is widely circulated I'll upgrade from my current W7 to W10 in September or October.
That should be enough time for any horrendous flaws to have been discovered.

-Just done it - so far, so good.
My W7 was getting so slow and buggy, it was a kindness.

I'm thinking along the same lines myself, when I shall also upgrade my computer.
