Searchers spot wreckage of missing Indonesia plane

A search plane has spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing with 54 people onboard, rescue officials said on Monday, after villagers in Papua reported finding the crashed jet.

There was no immediate word if there were any survivors from the crash, which happened in bad weather on Sunday in Indonesia’s mountainous easternmost province of Papua.

Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Oksibil, and Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said search and rescue teams were preparing to try to reach the crash site by air and foot.

Search planes went into the air early Monday after residents of a village not far from Oksibil told local police that they saw a plane flying low before crashing into a mountain, said Ludiyanto, who heads the search and rescue operation from Jayapura.

Ludiyanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said that rugged, forested terrain and bad weather were hindering the search.

Local media reports said all the passengers are Indonesians. The airline has not released a passenger manifest.

European plane maker ATR said in a statement late Sunday that it “acknowledges the reported loss of contact” with the Trigana flight “and is standing by to support the relevant aviation authorities.”

ATR, based in Toulouse, France, makes regional planes with 90 seats or less.

Indonesian plane crash: All 54 bodies recovered in Papua

Indonesian rescuers have found the bodies of all 54 people who were onboard a Trigana Air plane that crashed in the western Papua region.
The head of the search and rescue agency said his team had found the aircraft completely destroyed and partially burnt.
The plane came down on Sunday in dense forest in a mountainous area, close to its destination of Oksibil.
It was carrying 44 adult passengers, five children, and five crew members.
The plane was also said to be carrying about 6.5 billion rupiah ($486,000; £300,000) in cash, which was due to be distributed to poor families in the area. Officials have not said whether this has been located.
Members of the rescue team - made up of about 100 police, military and civilians - began reaching the site on Tuesday morning.

It is important that they find the money or at least nearly all of it. Otherwise it adds another mystery to the sad event. Was it actually ever on board?

Yeah Jay, that could create a conspiracy theory.

They supposedly recovered all the bodies so therefore surely money (notes) should either have been floating around everywhere or the box/case it was in should have also been located with it's contents intact.

This aspect has all gone quiet.

The poor who this money was supposedly destined for wait like "Waiting for Godo".

Virtual money (never on board) or does it bring back shades of the movie "Cliffhanger"?:applause:
