It's nice to see a kid doing something worthwhile, rather than sitting at home all day on an "X" Box. I bet your one proud father, and rightly so.

That's the place to start, on the shop floor. Well done lad.
I wasn't an apprentice but started my career in aviation in the Royal Air Force. There I gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd line maintenance experience before going onto the shop floor and then progressed into drafting, design and design engineering, all still in the aircraft industry. Then managed to get that very rare experience called prototype design before spending the last few years consulting. Never knew it all but the basic experience at the start held me in good stead right to the end.
The 'day one experiences' held good to the very end. Been there, done that and got the T shirt. Can't beat that!

By the way, good sense of humour is a pre-requisite for the industry.

Back on line at last. Many thanks for your words of encouragement and advice. He is really enjoying it. The humour or 'Banta' as he calls it has already started. I asked how his first day went and was told "well dad, I have signed the official secrets act so I could tell you but I would have to kill you afterwards".

Hi everyone, just wanted to share the news that sgt.austin junior got his GCSE results today and has now secured an engineering apprenticeship with AgustaWestland starting on Tuesday. My son is going to make Whirleybirds, giant egg whisks, choppers , call them what you will, they fly and he will be making them!
