Big question is, who supplied Turkish seperatists with MANPADS? Not old Strela or Redeye either? Igla is dangerous stuff.

some questions:
- why did the shooter wait before shooting
- why did the other guy count down
- what was the sound right before the missile launch
- does the Cobra have any defences or warning systems against such an attack?

Igla is heavily exported pretty much across the world, so good luck figuring out where it came from.

It would be well deserved if Syria supplied it anyway. Turkey has been backing Islamist militants in Syria, so tit-for-tat is par for the course. Not least Ahrar ash-Sham, which recently massacred a load of Alawites in Zara.

I think that the thread title is a bit misleading. If that video (youtube seems to have take it down but I believe it is the same one that is all around the net ) shows PKK and a Turkish AH-1 Cobra, then we are talking about the Turkish offensive in Turkey, not Syria.

Well that border is so porous that it really makes little difference.
You've also got to laugh at the consistency of YouTube's 'violent/graphic' censorship policy. Seems more like Erdogan got upset again and threatened them. There's several version of it anyway.

I was just wondering, if those people fighting there were not the PKK but Iranian Kurds and the Iranian authorities handled the situation at the exact same way Turkey does...

I think it is pretty clear that which side of the border this happened on has a great deal of significance.

Except when it's ISIS fighters getting help and hospital treatment. Turkey has been on the attack against Kurds both sides of the border anyway, both directly and indirectly through Islamist insurgents. I think it's fair to say they deserved trouble because they helped create it.
My comments simply reflected the fact that various undesirables are passing over that border on the ground on a regular basis, as if it didn't exist. To date Turkey has only made an effort to stop one aircraft. Now they've lost an aircraft, so maybe it went across the border slightly, or maybe the Igla guys decided it was close enough to shoot down anyway, who knows?

A lot of SA-18 got lost from Libya inventory when the rebels took over and some of the weapons were even available for sale on internet.

I think the Kurds both sides of the border see themselves as a people with a right to self-determination under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which Turkey is a party to. Their place of abode seems to be Southern Turkey, Northern Iraq and North Eastern Syria.

South east Turkey (but very large numbers also live in cities in western Turkey, especially Istanbul, which has more Kurds than any other city: it's been estimated that a third of the Kurds in Turkey live outside the traditionally Kurdish region), along much of the northern border of Syria including the NW, northern Iraq & north-west Iran, with a smaller population in the NE.

Stop spouting the BS. Kurds hit it after it had fired its BGM-71's on Kurdish positions.
