After the mirage F1, another legend is going away...End of classic old school fighter jet (no FBW) within the French armed forces. Last public apperance at a meeting on may 22 at Biscaross.

Not so long ago (2005), there were jaguar, mirage IV, mirage F1, Super Etendard...Logical evolution but getting less and less diverse and more boring.

Mirage 200 & Rafale only now.

As a farewell & tribute thread (for a change), let's post favorite & rare Super Etendard pics :very_drunk:

FYI, there is an excellent serie of 3 articles about the Iraki Super Etendard in the February, March and April issues of "Le Fana de l'aviation" (with a beautifull cover as well :) )

Cool plane, sad to see it go.

Impressive combat record as well.

Sob, SuE is one of my favourites. Faithfully flying on decade after decade, bombing Le Tricolore's enemies to bits. It is amazing how much mileage they got out of 1950's airframe mated with 1940's engine. All end-users used them in combat and to my knowledge, none were ever lost due to enemy action.

It was probably retired because they had shot all the cables into sea :dev2:

Brazilian Skyhawks are still launched by this method.

Wow! impressive fly past at the end (6 Rafale, 7 SEM and one E2C) .

Any hints of what they are going to do with the surviving airframes?

Glad you like the vid.

Watch a good movie from the ECPAD of the Super Etendard when it was the new shiny toy of the French Navy:

is there any good article that gives the history of the Super Etendard in the various navies it served? The one I'd read a long time ago was this one, which is fairly detailed

It seems like a good, simple aircraft, and being uncomplicated meant it served the role it was designed for, well enough. Not being handicapped like the Sea Harrier, to take off unassisted, and being able to land using arresting cables meant that the payload range deficiencies may not have been as great on this airplane.

Super Etendard #1, the first production jet, still going strong this weekend... 38 years after its first flight!

Markings under the cockpit show that it dropped 7 GBUs in combat over its lifetime. The other SEM this weekend dropped 15 GBUs.

Note the special commemorative paint...

This just leaves A-4 and Q-5 as the last survivors of the classic attack jet era.

Pic of the Super Etendard's last Exocet live fire shoot a few months ago. Still deadly 33 years after that attack against HMS Sheffield...

The French certainly got the most out of what they had.

And no, the little pirate is not dead for now: news comes from Argentina that 5 of them with enough engines are on their way back to service there.

The surplus French Marine Nationale aircraft (serials 1, 31, 41, 44 and 57) will be purchased including eight spare engines and a flight simulator.

one thing that's really crazy about it is how small the cockpit is... I once had the opportunity to climb in it, with my 1m88, I had the feeling that I strapped the aircraft on my back
