Hi All,
I have logged on to the forum and having entered I have at the top of my screen a bar the announces (This Site uses cookies etc.etc.etc.) This has never appeared before when using this forum. Has anybody else been confronted by this and if so has this been put up by the forum and is it safe to click the ok icon to clear it ?

Yes I've seen it.
This site dumps a number of cookies on your computer, I expect it goes towards paying the electric bill ?

It is safe.

Contrary to a lop of crap out there cookies do not steal your email, or eat your firstborn. They are not traded for money (they are only little text files given to youtr browser by the site) and have nothing to do with dodgy activities or spam.

Most of the time they give you a randomly-generated unique ID against a site so that the site knows its you the next time you are on any page of it, so as to present more useful stuff to you. They CAN be used to target advertising (so they do have commercial value) but not increase the amount of it as that is down to page design.

Most professional sites use cookies. The general web etiquette is to announce the fact. And give the option of rejecting them.

IIRC, it's UK or European law to advise about cookies.
Mine are cleared when I close the browser anyway.

What bugs me is I've now got to enable three previously unnecessary scripts just to get rid of it.

Hi All,
I always thought the cookies passed your details on to other 3rd parties then you would be bombarded with unwanted adverts or sites asking opinions etc.etc.etc. which I always thought was the definition of spam ? But if you say it's safe to click on then i'll just delete it thanks all so much....:eagerness:

EDIT: I have just tried to un-tick all the boxes and the Necessary Marketing will not allow me to do that so like I suggested is this just a massive advertising of predictive web searching ?

I have a wash programme to clear all this crud off as I shut down.

It would be better to have boxes for you to tick as opposed to unticking.

Hi,

I have removed the one at the top and replaced it with the one that is now at the bottom. Hopefully this is less annoying for you all.

It's certainly less annoying for me - I can't see it.
