Just heard this on BBC Radio 4 news. Shameful of the MOD.

In what way is it shameful?

We'll have no airfields left soon....... what little is left of the RAF will all be crammed into 2 or 3 airfields......hardly sensible, but the beancounters rule.

I wonder where HHA will move to...?

IMO this is where the RAF museum should relocate to as it’s somewhere just as historic and significant as Hendon itself, and get away from this obsession with London.

A brilliant suggestion, the land for housing at Hendon would probably exceed what Scampton would cost to buy

Moving the museum to Scampton actually makes a bit of sense. If they're running out of space at Hendon then moving to an airfield, steeped in history, would be a logical step.

I'm sure Lincolnshire would benefit from a bit more tourism as well. It even forms quite a nice triangle with Duxford and Cosford if you plot them on the map, with Newark and Sywell sitting within the triangle, and Aeroventure/XH558 just up the road. You could devise a sort of aviation 'grand tour' if you were enterprising. :eagerness:

You could tow XM607 up the road from RAF Waddington.

It is my understanding that the RAFM was involved with this consultation process in 2013 http://lincolnshire.moderngov.co.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=1891

I'm sure that a memorandum of understanding was also announced between LCC & RAFM Hendon and that I have posted about it before about these parts!

Why suddenly is this news? Theres been a target list of proposed closures for months. With the shrunken state of the RAF they dont need as many bases. Lots of historic sites have a good second life.

Please move Gibsons dog and bury it next to Gibson in Steenbergen.

Where will the Reds go? IMO it should be reserved for a historical base as mentioned above, RAFM or not

There have been rumours for some time that the Reds would be moving to Waddington but if there was anything to that I couldn't say. We all know what this great hobby of ours is like for rumours!

And no one seems to be interested in the fact that Linton on Ouse is to go as well.

It has the same pedigree as Scampston.....

End of the line for military bases in Yorkshire.

I doubt that the reds will move to anywhere with a lot of Air Traffic Movements.
Wittering and Leeming have both been suggested on other forums.
Wittering is very quiet nowadays,Leeming already operates Hawk T 1's but having the reds based there would seriously interrupt Boneyard (100sqn) ops whilst the reds do practices.

Wittering has to be favourite, unless they move RA to Honington which is more out of the way.....?

Have to move the RA out to make way for the RA :D

Wittering would by far be the most sensible choice as its infrastructure is all there and in good order. Scampton itself has been left to get in a parlous state in parts - its massively under used .
In terms of heritage - yes its pretty much perfect in terms of location - it needs the RAFM to realise that their 1970's buildings at Hendon are past their best and make a decision to move
somewhere that has growth potential ratherthan being an enclave in a housing estate.

The 1970's buildings at Hendon are of course just a façade to some original WW1 vintage hangars (which is why the roof leaks).

Good idea Rob.

Does an online petition to the Houses of Parliament make any difference? Just an idea.
