Why is everything at least two days old?

Melv, the same thing happened to me when I clicked on the link to the forum - for some reason it took me to page 3 not page 1- easy to sort - put in page 1 top right hand and it will take you to the newest stuff. Why it does this I know not.

Also what do the grey bars under the username mean and why do some have orange bars/stripes?

It measures how fab your contributions are. I am afraid you score only 20 % !! :p .In truth, no idea. Length of membership maybe ?? Frequency of posting ?

After the glacial period, and general dis-enchantment, thankfully the forum is more-or less functional again, so thanks to whoever whacked it with a hammer. It seems to have done the trick.

The coloured bars are not length of membership, they must be number of posts since the 'upgrade',I guess they must have come from a kiddies website or something !!

It's gotten faster but i visit less often since the change.
It has lost a certain appeal [not sure what though ,an intangible something?]

The grey/coloured bar graph is related to your "Reputation ranking" (I said "RANKING!) - it's basically a pointless forum add on that many forum operators think is a good way to show who the best contributors are, i.e. "is on a distinguished road", "will become famous soon enough" or "has a spectacular aura about"...

Me? I'm on the road to nowhere...

The extremely tasteful coloured Bars are fairly unique LOL - In that I have never seen them being used on any other aviation or car forum, the bars just look like some pointless Bling ! The bars do not really fit into a mature Forum Page !!

bazv - the reputation system is not always 'turned on' by forum owners - they probably have the same dislike of them as I do.
vBulletin has this bar graph "is on a distinguished road", "will become famous soon enough" or "has a spectacular aura about" etc rank structure.
Each segment is usually equivalent to 0-99 "points"...

Hi Bob
Thanks for the extra info - I guess I am lucky to be on forums which either do not use vbulletin or do not turn the bars on.

I thought that the coloured bars indicated how many forum friends you have. Or is the the number of your followers? Or maybe it records how many selfies you've posted with a Spitfire behind you? ;)

"The forum does seem to be working to a degree but we do seem to be missing a lot of old members :("

That was happening long before the problems occurred. There are many erudite and knowledgeable people who no longer post on here (perhaps they may lurk) and haven't done so for some time.

When clicking on "Historic" from the list of Forums, I now get a blank, grey screen more often than not. Refreshing the screen sometimes works but sometimes doesn't. This has only happened today.

Along with a lot of other veteran posters, I'm starting to think this Forum is just not worth visiting any more.

I find the Forum rather slow and tiresome now. I must confess to not frequenting it as much as I did and consider the changes to be, at best, a sideways step, no improvement, just different - change for the sake of change. At worst it seems inadequate for its original purpose.

A problem I had previously, which proved extremely frustrating at times, was trying to post pictures. Reducing the filesize (off forum) to allow them to be posted more easily was a problem in itself, but I'd rather hoped that it might have been made easier with the new format, and isn't. It's such a convoluted process that I've often given up.

Other (probably younger) people who are more familiar with manipulating the technology seem to manage better. I must admit to having learned the long and hard way how to work this stuff so much of the blame is mine. However, should it not be easier to work with for the likes of myself?

For instance; how are you supposed to get to page 50, for example, on a much-frequented thread without having to click on and highlight the page number and entering the one you want? That method works for me but seems long-winded and if there's an easier way I'm yet to find it. It's not obvious.

Also, I was rather proud of my post total/tally in the top RH side of the original text box/posting, why has this disappeared? Those grey bars mean nothing and when hovering the cursor over them come up with a meaningless, inane statement. Typical modern rubbish, in my book (yes, I am old fashioned but like the modern ideas which work and are of use) and we can do without it. It adds nothing - not even humour.

I'm sure those who are tasked with "improving" or revamping things are committed to their task but should not the results of all that effort (and expense?) provide us with a better product? The way I feel about it at the moment (and I've given myself and the new system time to bed in) is; give me the old format back - warts and all. Just improve the mechanism whereby I/we can post pictures and I'd be happy.

To quote that well-worn saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems entirely appropriate in this instance.

Grumble over.

Anon.

I find that the speed etc. has improved markedly over the last week or so. Still not up to the old format but I understand why the changes were made and like many things there is no going back.

Nope, I also do not receive e-mail notifications anymore concerning thread-subscriptions.:apologetic: :(
I do get e-mail notifications when I receive "likes" for my postings, though...
