Ok so to come at this from a different angle - have any Fulmar crash sites been excavated... anywhere?
The reason I’m asking is that I have acquired an item from the cockpit that has been distorted as if involved in a crash.
Im aware of a couple of high ground wrecks but so far it seems that very little was found at these.

The only one I have ever looked at was the one near Wrexham and as per the Peak District website, almost nothing there.

Thanks for the response. I’m aware of this one and of course what I have could of come from this one many moons ago.
What I was hoping was that an actual dig had taken place which would make more sense to something remaining almost intact but with distortion and damage.

Not Kent but Devon. There was a reader’s letter in Air Pictorial way back possibly in the 1960’s from a pilot claiming to have spotted a wing bearing a roundel whilst he was flying over Dartmoor. He assumed it was a Spitfire. Years later I was going on holday to the area and thinking it would be fun to try to locate it I wrote to him and asked where it was. His address was given in his letter and I vaguely recollect he lived in Honiton. He replied saying that the wreckage was not there anymore. It had been recovered by a team from what then was RAF Chivenor and it turned out that it was not a Spitfire after all but a Fulmar.

That’s a very interesting story, skyskooter, and probably along the lines of what I was hoping for. An identifiable wing possibly points to other substantial parts surviving the crash.
Don’t suppose the serial number was mentioned at all was it?

Not wishing to muddy the water..... but large pieces of Battle K9391 were recovered from Dartmoor by a group from south Devon (DARRT?) many years ago, Is it possible that the Fairey's were confused with the passage of time?

High Ground Wrecks mentions a Fulmar crash site on Tanners Hill, Dartmoor. Date given for the crash is 18.01.42. No serial number though.
It also has Battle K9391 as a separate entry.

There was one at least I think, I was offered the instrument panel and turned it down, I seem to think the engine was made to run again

OK, I stand corrected. My edition of High Ground Wrecks, No.2, doesn't mention a Fulmar in its listing of Dartmoor crashes.

MM - Thanks for the info and date. I know there were very few Fulmar crashes on UK soil so this helps. It’s probably listed in the book ‘Aircraft Of The Fleet Air Arm To 1945’ of which I don’t have a copy.
JC - Surprised you let that one go :). Any idea where it went?

There's certainly very few listed in High Ground Wrecks (3rd Edition). As well as the Dartmoor one there's another unidentified Fulmar near Westerdale in Caithness; another unidentified on the Mull of Kintyre and N4074 on Minera Mountain in North Wales. It's mentioned here - http://wrecksiteuk.blogspot.com/2012/10/llangollen-revisit-beaufighter-ne203.html - that parts seen on a previous visit to the site had been removed by the time they re-visited it in 2012.
I find it quite surprising that 3 out of the 4 wrecks were unidentified despite 2 of them having exact dates when the crash happened.

Were there any Fulmar crash sites in Kent that have been dug, or any Fulmars that were scrapped in Kent? Any help appreciated!
