-The black paint won't be original. You can see that the paint is in the heavily pitted areas, so i would imagine these came from a B-17 wreck/crash site and were panted to slow down the corrosion or painted after being sandblasted.
Very interesting though, especially with them being a pair rather than just the one.

-Thanks Keith - I thought it was later as there is some grey/green paint underneath.

-have you had a go at removing the black paint? Not far below that area of exposed original paint there might be a number stenciled on it.
Depending on what sort of paint was used, it may be possible to use some kind of thinners that might just remove the black and let you save some of the original paint. You could then clear coat them.
If saving the original paint fails you could probably get them both sandblasted for less than twenty quid, give them a good coat of primer and aerosol them in a nice interior green colour. That would preserve them and make them look nice at the same time.
It would be well worth the effort in my opinion.

-Keith got around to trying to remove the black today. Used some gentry stripper and the black flaked away - There was no number under the paint on the one I cleaned. The back brackets were the original green under the black confirming the overpaint.

-Post some more photos when you get chance.
I wonder what aircraft they came from. Could be 44-83325 which crashed on Beinn Edra, Skye.

-Well I have a project, original is always best, can I ask how much was the postage?

-Postage to me was by Parcelforce as two separate parcels and very affordable inside UK at under £30 for both.

Postie staggered down the drive with 50 kg of steel today.
Confirmed they are B17 Pilot and co pilot seat armour.
Not sure if the black paint is original.
Any projects needing these ?
