I have what would be referred to as a cluster joint 'A' from a Hawker Hurricane. I was told sometime ago that occasionally the aircraft identity would be stamped into the block insert for the joint but that this was something only done on Gloster built aircraft
As can be seen in the attached photos there is a number stamped into the block. At first I thought it was a part number but I can't find it in the schedule of parts for a MKII Hurricane. The stamps on the side plates confirm this is indeed a Gloster produced joint A for a MKII only. port side.
The number looks like its been stamped on as an after thought as its quite 'untidy' compared with the other part numbers on display.
Can anyone shed any light onto what this number may be or signify

It is a Mk II plate, Mk I was different. Peter Vasher's Hurricane from india did have the serial stamped in this tube insert, but does not look like a aircraft serial, maybe a repair reference No?? Sorry can't be of more help.

They are certainly Gloster part numbers; and as you mention, most likely Hurricane. Glosters built these aircraft at two sites prior to commencing the Typhoon production: the main Hucclecote factory, and the sub-site at Stoke Orchard.
(According to A.P.1804A, Vol 111, Part 1: Schedule of spare parts, second edition; Typhoon part numbers run from A.8193 to A.125722. including A. B. and C. prefixes.)
The is a distinct variation in tidiness with the Gloster stamped part numbers; as we have found with our Typhoon components, as they were mostly stamped by hand.

With the Typhoon, the cockpit section was the primary identifier under drawing E.101500. This I.D. plate was attached to the port joint L and has no bearing on the overall aircraft identity.
The rear monocoque also had its own I.D. plate, and also had no bearing on the overall aircraft identity.
The only reference to the specific identity of the airframe appeared in Gloster's assembly work records when the main component parts were mated together.
An identification plate may well have been attached to the starboard inner face of the cockpit panelling; but this is not founded in proven fact, because any surviving cockpit sections are only tube constructions, as the aluminium panelling was stripped and smelted down during the scrapping operations.

Both A105107 and B105103 are Hawker Drawing numbers. B105103 is for the Port inner side plate of joint A (Mk.II aircraft only) while A105107 is the reinforcing plate for the same. I’m presuming the G numbers are the Gloster AID Inspector’s stamps.

Nice Joint A from a Gloster built Hurri. Yep G5 etc is the inspector stamp - typical format etc for Gloster built. Hawker and Gloster (and indeed, CCF) built Hurricanes all have part numbers using the Hawker part number system - just as all hawker and Gloster built Tyffies did. On hawker built construction plates, there is the RAF serial number and another serial number starting 41H. That is the factory construction number. Note it is same format right up to the Hawk! I think, note think, Gloster did not use 41H serial numbers. So it could be the Gloster construction number, which you could tie to an RAF serial number. Now, if I'm wrong and Gloster also used construction serial numbers starting 41H, then you may find your block stamping omits the 41H - so you could still tie to an airframe. For those that think it might just ne the part number of the block - well, no. That is not stamped into the block by hand and also starts A.

Hope this makes sense

Gloster's designator was always G5; with later numeric and letter suffixes ( G41A-G43-G41L , etc) for various marks of Meteors; and GA5 for Javelins.
41H was indeed Hawker's designator as an alternative to the standard Hwaker "HA" designator.

Does anyone know how you can link the factory construction number to a RAF serial number ?
