Laurie Gwen Shapiro’s biography of Amelia Earhart will be published next year by Viking Books. She is an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU, and the 2022 winner of the Silurian Press Club’s People Profile award for her New York Times profile on World War II pilot Si Spiegel.

As this story -  https://news.yahoo.com/amelia-earhart-kimono-spikes-racist-032918711.html   - makes abundantly clear, the author of this new bio is a firm believer in Elgen Long and the "crashed and sank" school regarding Earhart's demise. The write-up politely but thoroughly demolishes the various sillier theories like Japanese capture. And no where does it mention TIGHAR or Ric Gillespie.

Anyone care to venture a guess as to how long it will take Gillespie and his acolytes to trash this book before it sees the light of day?

He'll probably threaten a lawsuit claiming "loss of livelihood" or something.

He's probably phoning one of the ambulance chasers who advertise on TV as we speak.

Seriously, I don't know how RG can dismiss "crashed and sank" so completely considering 99% of her flight was over water.I

Really, can someone explain that?

If he didn't dismiss it, he'd have nothing to base his obsession on so wouldn't have been able to make a comfortable living for 20-odd years.

Hello, new member.

Question, TIGHAR decided that 157-337 is a sun line. It has special significance because of the position of the sun 67° true which is 11° north of Howland. The problem is there is the 67° magnetic (76.54° true) which is 1.5° or about 80 miles north of Howland. How did they decide which 67° the famous 157-337 was based on since they never did any research on 67° magnetic?

Is this forum neutral? Or does it lean to a specific theory? The reason I ask is I asked a question on what I thought was a news site just to find out it was a saipan theory site. Boy were they mad.

This forum is moribund, but what's left of it has no leaning, political, barking mad or otherwise.

That's apart from a conviction from most members that nothing Gillespie says is worth hearing.

Most of the information regarding Earhart has been interpreted by TIGHAR. 157-337, the radio transmissions, which transmissions are credible and so on.

Facts, 98% of the flight over the ocean, the true course from Lae to Howland is 78° (78.33°), the distance is 2556-mile or 2221-nautical miles, the vertical distance (north and south) distance between Lae and Howland is 517 miles, 9.49° east magnetic declination near Howland (1937), 9.82° (2022). Can't forget 157-337.

True course formula: sin(inverse)(517÷distance)

2556, sin=11.67, 90-11.67= 78.33° true course. 78-9.49= 68.5° magnetic near Howland (on approach).

2221, sin=13.46, 90-13.46= 76.54° true course. 76.54-9.49= 67.05° magnetic near Howland.

Over 90% of accidents are caused by human error. There was Amelia Earhart the pilot, Fred Noonan the navigator and Clarence Williams who created and supplied the information on how to get to Howland.

With all these "experts", how come there is very little mentioned about Clarence Williams? How come there is no research mentioning the 67° magnetic? How come 67° magnetic was overlooked by so many? Is it possible that they flew 2556-miles on a 76.54° true course (67.05° magnetic near Howland) then turned right 90° onto 157-337 magnetic all because of a simple math error?

And did anyone catch the math error?

Wrightth - I'm sure you could try floating your math error theory over at the TIGHAR forums, where it would receive a dispassionate and fact-based review by the many, many knowlegable members  *cough*

Oh, wait, no you can't - TIGHAR's forums are closed, members only. You could try posting on their Facebook page to see what response it gets. Good luck with that.

I think TIGHAR has no clue, along with most other theoriest, buka Island, saipan.

I am just asking a question. I have no theory, I think they are in the ocean somewhere. I think the plane should be located because too many people profiting off of crap. And then let the  theoriest fight over who is right.

Sorry if I stepped on someone's dog.

I don't think anybody here is that interested, although I'm prepared to be proven wrong.

Not to tic off people, I just want to understand.

Project blue angel has started a go fund me page for their trips to buka Island to check out the PV-1 ventura. Chris Williamson just released a book and is touring. He is with Project blue angel. We have TIGHAR that can't find their butts with both hands raising money to search for "the white bird", Amelia Earhart, and I read a new Project Glen Miller plane 1944. We can't forget about the money RG gets for speaking engagements, and what about guest appearances on TV shows.

People have been criticizing for years about the crap being sent around. All the criticizing hasn't stopped them from profiting. We can sit in our chairs and complain all we want it won't change anything. The only way to stop them is by doing some research and  locating the plane and proving them all wrong.

Good luck folks!

That's it in a nutshell, mate. The problem with that bland (although entirely correct) assertion is that it costs enormous sums of money to search in the very deep ocean floor off of Howland Island. To date the search for Amelia and Fred hasn't caught the fancy of any of the dot com billionaires who dabble in oceanography and deep water searching.

There have been three searches that I'm aware of: Nauticos, Williams and Associates and the Waitt Institute. Each covered a different part of the ocean floor north, west or south of Howland. Robert Ballard is rumored to be planning a trip to poke around there in 2023, after he failed to find anything at all at Nikumaroro Island a few years ago.

I started my research by asking one question which was "what is the true course from Lae to Howland Island"?

I found only one source which was a TIGHAR illustration which I didn't trust so I calculated it myself (78.33°) then I learned how to convert it to a magnetic (68.5°). This raised a new question, where is a 67° magnetic?

This is how I started my research on the 67° magnetic.

TIGHAR is one of the largest sources for Amelia Earhart information. I figured if I can't find the plane then at least I can create some doubt and make it difficult for TIGHAR and get people to start asking questions and put pressure on TIGHAR and or other groups to start finding answers. As long as nobody is asking questions TIGHAR and the other groups are free to say and  teach history any way they want.

I  am going to keep asking questions because there is 7.8 billion people on this planet and I only need one. A forest fire only requires one spark to set it off.

Out of those 7.8 billion people, how many actually care?

Billionaire Google.com executive Alan Eustace and (fellow tech billionaire) Gateway co-founderTed Waitt both devoted millions upon millions of dollars in backing (ultimately fruitless) Nauticos-led searches for the wreck of Earhart's Lockheed in the vicinity of Howland Island.  And the similar efforts of Willianson & Associates were underwritten by venture capitalist Dana Timmer. It seems like the deep water hunt for AE and Fred has already caught the attention of plenty of deep pocket investor/explorers. Regardless, it will likely take many more commas-worth of additional cash before we ever see the ultimate resolution of this mystery.

Of course , once the mystery is solved then the income dries up --maybe a better business plan is to keep it going

Actually it was me that said, "To date the search for Amelia and Fred hasn't caught the fancy of any of the dot.com billionaires who dabble in oceanography and deep water searching." I had forgotten where the money for the three searches I cited had come from, thanks for correcting that.

The problem is that clearly Earhart and Noonan did not arrive "over Howland" but Amelia's description of the weather they were flying in fitted the skies to the north of Howland and not those to the south of Howland (that in itself punches a massive hole in the Tighar "Earhart Tap".

Clearly some type of navigation error occured, - miscalculation of the International date line crossing, poor health of Noonan due to drinking? mis-communication between Earhart in the cockpit and Noonan at the far end of the passenger cabin on the tail side of the massive internal "long range" fuel tank.

So its likely that they did "Ditch and Sank" but either:
1. Previous Side Scans missed the wreck because its buried in silt
2. It Ditched "outside" the scanned area's
3. It "glided" / "drifted" and washed along in the undersea currents to an area "outside the scanned area's.

It is highly unlikely that they flew through clear skies to find an island further south of Howland, with fuel they didn't have, on radio silence, and then crash landed on an island with no runways, where as by taking further sun sightings in the clear weather, Noonan could have taken them back to Howland.

As to all the rubbish Tigher generates - its ALL rubbish.
