I have recently recieved in the post a model of Hurricane G-AMAU in Kings cup air race colours.

The model is a Corgi collectors club item and on the Aviation Archive forum there is much discussion as to what shade of blue it should be...

I have spent hours searching the net and im struggeling to find a picture or any text relating as to what 'shade' of blue was used:confused:

For some reason i have it in my head that a Dark 'navy' blue was used however i can't prove this:rolleyes:

If anyone has any pics or references to G-AMAU i would be extremely greatful

Help!!!!!!!!

And 'most unhelpful reply of the week will be:'

It's Hawkers Blue. They had their own livery (Hurri, Tomtit and Hart) and painted them in house colours, which were alys, as far as I've been able to establish, were referred to as Hawker's blue.

I'm sure someone else can do better.

Help!!!!!!!! [/B][/QUOTE]

The aircraft appeared in two differing blues,

As race number 41 it flew in a mid blue and gold scheme.( Late 40's)

As race number 76 it flew in a dark blue and white scheme, both schemes had gold spinners. (1950's)

I will try to find a colour shot, although that might prove difficult.

Hah,
I've got photos (B&W) which I can't post, 'cos they're not mine. Septic and I may have a colour shot or two, but I doubt they'll be accurate renditions - let alone over the web. I can even (I think) point you at film of the a/c and certainly film of the Tomtit in blue, but I'll have to have a dig around.
As they say - wait one. Mark12 - can you help? It's a kinda single radiator cloth backed Spitfire thingy... You may have a photo my mistake...
Cheers

I've a feeling I've read somewhere Royal Blue but that could be, IIRC, that one year it was entered for the King's Cup by Princess Margaret.

Aeroplane Heaven made a model of the hurricane for flightsimulater 2002. They put a lot of work in the planes they make for this simulator.

Look at the tread about the spitfire Tr9 of HFL that they are building for FS2002, FS2004 and CFS3.

One of the Hurricanes they made was painted in the colours of racer G-AMAU. This machine was payware, so I think they will have investigated the coulorscheme properly.

Here are some screenshots of how they saw the blue paint on this plane:

Thank You...

Thank you all for your help on this one!!:)

Von Perthes the photo with the Spitfire kinda proves that it was a dark colour, if you compare the contrasting camo on the Spit...

Stieglitz... Flightsims mmmm Im on IL2 at the mo but thats another thread me thinks...

Chuck, im gonna send an email tonight! good shout...

I know its a petty thing, and minor detail such as markings etc don't usually bother me but for some strange reason i have a 'bee in my bonnet' about this one  I reckon i might be cracking up:rolleyes: :)

I have no experience with Aeroplane Heaven, but that statement sure doesn't cover all the payware stuff that's out there!

That is true, but I think AH is one of the better providers of payware-addons. (price-quality). But I did have less good experiances with other providers.

This colour shot of the Tomtit may give some indication of the Hurricane's clour scheme, although the colour reproduction may not be totally acurate.

This is from the Ken Ellis 'Wrecks & Relics' The Album

The photo is not credited so I guess its one from his collection.

Hi Dez et at,
I've had a rootle in the Pathe site (www.britishpathe.com) and found film of the aircraft. Here's some stills of it:

You can find the film in question under '1472_21'

Here's a pic of the driver. Apparently he had a rather posh girlfriend for a while!

Not sure if the text under the cockpit has been noted before.

OK. It's Group Captain Peter Townsend in the Hurricane. The film just shows a short clip of it.

Details are: 1472.21 | AIR NEWS (THE BRISTOL BRABAZON & KING'S CUP AIR RACE) (1:36:19:00 - 1:38:28:00) 22/06/1950

As regards the Tomtit, which in my opinion gives us the colours of the Hurricane (they were Hawker's House Colours) there's a great film of Shuttleworth in 1965. The scary thing is how little has changed!

Details: 335.02 | ANTIQUE AIRCRAFT (1:08:36:00 - 1:10:07:00) 09/09/1965

I've compressed from the maximum size you can pick up the stills, so there IS more detail in them - they are much better than video stills.

Still:
