Leeds Bradford - Eivissa Ibiza

Well, it was an early start (understatement of the year) as we had to drive to Leeds from Newcastle first; we left the house at about 02.00 on the 25/08/04 hoping to arrive at Leeds Airport at about 04.00 for check-in at 04.30. We arrived on schedule at Leeds, the weather was worse than expected but we got on with it. First to check-in we were as always, and went straight through security to boarding gate 8 where G-BYAI Boeing 757-200 waited for us.

We boarded at 07.05, 25 minutes before departure and at 07.32 we pushed back. It was a very bumpy taxi to runway 27, we held for a Jet2 737 already taking off then we left, take-off speed was 152 mph according to the Captain, we climbed straight ahead through the light clouds over Leeds up to our cruising level at 37000 feet. 500 mph was our cruising speed as we passed over London, Paris, Britney and Bordeaux, then we crossed the boarder and started to fly over the med, the cruise was very smooth, and there were great views of our parallel traffic. There was one aircraft on our left hand side which came up along side us just over the channel and then turned left towards Germany.

There weren’t many turns on the decent but one very sharp one to line up with Runway 24, I assumed the approach was visual as the plane kept turning slightly as if to make corrections, and it was a nice day so the weather was good for visual. We touched down smoothly on R24 and 2 seconds later the reverse and speed brakes kicked in, I counted 12 seconds before we left the runway (that’s 1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi) and then taxied to the gate, with a follow me car leading the way. We left the plane, all smiles with very friendly goodbyes from the Britannia Airways staff, into an island which at the time was hotter than 35oC and left for the hotel.

• Hint, we checked in first and our bags came first in Ibiza.

On my return flight BY587B the captain gave no information about cruising altitudes or speeds so I can’t really make a detailed report so I wont.

Nice report Concorde.

How did you find Britannia and Leeds Bradford Airport?

Another thing - You will have not departed from runway 27 (Only the smallest a/c use that runway), you will have taxied past 27 but will have departed from 14 or 32.

I flew on G-BYAI last year on the way home from Corfu into LBA.

What a/c did you fly on on the way home and how was that flight? Was it on time?

Britannia were OK at LBA, they had the boarding time wrong but i kept the family right. I must have just seen the 27 sign while taxiing to the runway.

Flew BYAO on the way home, and that flight was good, but the cabin lights were dimmed for ages after t/o i didnt know why that was?
