BAA issues January 2005 traffic figures
09 February 2005

BAA announces January 2005 traffic increase of 7.4%

BAA's seven UK airports handled 9.9 million passengers in January, an increase of 7.4% against the same month last year.

During the month all airports recorded gains. Heathrow increased 6.1%, while Gatwick rose 10.8% and Stansted added 8.6%. More aggressive passenger marketing by airlines is believed to have driven growth at these airports.

At BAA's three Scottish airports an overall increase of 6.2% was recorded. Glasgow recorded an increase of 6.8%, Edinburgh added 4.9% and Aberdeen rose 8.3%. Glasgow and Edinburgh each benefited from strong growth on Irish routes and good performances on international services. A combination of severe storms in 2004 and new services contributed to Aberdeen's stronger performance. At Southampton an increase of 4.2% was recorded.

Across the markets, North Atlantic and Other Long Haul services performed strongly recording increases of 5.6% and 11.1% respectively. Low fare services continued to benefit European Scheduled and Irish markets with these sectors each increasing 8.3% during the month. European Charter traffic was down 1.6% overall.

Air transport movements were 3.3% higher and cargo tonnage was up by 5.9%.

Interesting to note that EDI has retained it's 'busiest
Scottish Airport' title for the third month running.?

I tend to look at the bigger picture. All of BAA's Scottish Airports are performing well with growth figures that are in some cases are above the UK average.

All of which has got to be good for the Scottish economy and increase the chances of securing more direct services from Scottish airports.

Intersting to note GLA retained its 'busiest airport in Scotland' title for the last god knows how many consectutive years...sorry

I aplogise for what appears to be GLA vs EDI remark but its really pathetic when it comes down to "my airport is busier than yours" and is now beginning to really annoy me. WHO CARES??!! Scotland now handles about 24mppa and that is the key statistic, whether its GLA,EDI,INV or Barra (don't the know airport code).

Quite correct Gaz. All BAA's Scottish airports are an integral part of the Scottish economy and I'm sure all Scots will be glad to see ALL doing well.

Always nice to see the continuous growth of air travel! :) Good to see EDI with strong growth figures even minus the Duo passenger numbers lost. No doubt contributing to the static ATM too.
