RAF Quedegley just south of Gloucester, can anyone tell me what this base was used for or what was based there, I drive past the old airfield everyday, and there are alot of huge hangers just off the side of the road,

Ive spoke to a couple of local chaps who work down there, but the're not sure what the base was used for, they do know that it used to have a long runway

Cheers any info would be great, ive tried doing search on the net but came up with nothing

Are you sure it was RAF Quedgley?

If it's the field you can see from the M5 that was Moreton Valence, mostly an offshoot of the Gloster factory used for flight testing etc.

RAF Quedgley

An RAF stores depot, at least it has been for the time I've been in the RAF and I'm sure its closed, or closing now. It was, at one time, connected to the main railway (Gloucester-Bristol) network and, when the transfer sidings became surplus to requirements, a group of our heritage railway volunteers lifted them for use on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

Yes your right the place is closed has an RAF base, its now being built on for Industrial and residential use, but on one side there are still alot of huge hangers still standing,

I just wondered what could of been housed in them

It was once 7MU. If you search the web on 7MU RAF you'll find reference to Quedgeley News (a community newsletter - nothing specifically military) in the Nov 04 edition they give a history of the site. Note the spelling. It was initially an ammunitions store, then a vehicle store. Later aircraft spares were there from what I recall. Never an airfield so far as I know. Its now to be redeveloped.

Thanks for the replys and info chaps, just wondering now why it would have taxi ways and a long runway, would that be for maybe distributing parts

I recall a friend trying to photograph this Meteor T.7, which is WF784, in the '60s and some irate W/O going absolutely ballistic at him for doing it! Happy days!
Pleased to say it still survives with the Jet Age Collection and in store, possibly at Staverton.

Would this mean Meteors flew from here in the 50's, with one being a gate guard

Yes it's still at Staverton ,where I photographed it today! It's sadly stored externally and away from public access at the very far side of the airfield, pending the Jet Age folk getting some resolution to their current difficulties.

I recall it well when on show at Quedgeley. I too initially had some grief over getting permission to photograph it there, but obtained the necessary approval eventually to publish a shot. It was one of my illustrations in Wrecks & Relics 5th edition back in 1976 (how time flies)!

Not sure about that as in the '60s, they put just any aircraft on the gate, depending what was available. However, the Hunter Restoration Group are restoring Hunter F.1 WP190, a Meteor NF.14 and a former Saudi Lightning here.

I didn't. I just entered 'Quedgeley'

If it doesn't appear in the relevant 'Action Stations' it's pretty certain it wasn't an RAF airfield before 1945

Im not sure about the runways and taxi ways myself mate, its only what ive been told from a couple of locals that say they've been on the old airfield and seen them, maybe if theres another local airfield, then maybe the're mistaking it with that,

Aha, look at this:
"After the R.A.F. maintenance unit was opened in 1939 it became the main employer in the parish, giving work in 1967 to 1,750 people, mostly civilians."

This (at least to me) infers that RAF Quedgeley never was a flying station!

must have had flying as it does still have a control tower, on the right as you pass on the M5 towards bristol.

Nope, that's Moreton Valence.

Quedgeley was never an airfield, it was a stores depot only. The confusion is definately with Moreton Valance, as has already been said.

The buildings in the background of the Meteor photograph are not hangars (please note correct spelling), they are typical stores buildings found at MUs of this type.
