Hey people, months back their was a T.V and newspaper report suggesting that Leeds/Bradford airport would be flying 3 times a week to the city of New York, on its website (LBA) it asked viewer what it thought of the idea

I would like to ask the members of the aviation forum what they think of it, when it will happen if it does get of, and finally which carriers would operate from LBA to NYC

First I have heard of it?

I'm guessing it would be something like a 3-times-weekly charter flight, maybe with Thomson or MyTravel, that's assuming its going to happen at all.

Does the Leeds/Bradford airport have a long runway to facilitate large aircrafts i.e Boeing 777 for trans-atlantic jouneys :dev2:

In a word no. An a/c of that size would get in and out of LBA no problem. The problem is the amount of fuel it would need to get to New York. With all that fuel on the a/c would weigh too much and would need to much rwy to get airbourne from LBA.

Surely that doesn't apply to the smaller, just as capable aircraft, such as the 757?

Sure this didnt come out of those fake Jet 2 photos? Someone thinking they were real and Jet 2 were to start long haul flights?

LBA did indeed have a survey on their website asking if people wanted to fly to New York, there have been lots of rumours that this may be starting next spring.

I cant see why the runway isnt long enough, BRS doesn't have any problem, im sure a CO 757 (Some with the added bonus of winglets), would do absolutely fine.

We do have a based 767 here, but that of course does the shorter Med flights, I think that would struggle on the transatlatics.

Michael - A charter flight? I dont know many charter flights that go to New York.

Incidentally - The Monarch A330s and Britannia 767s operating this winters cruise flights both have to go via somewhere (MON BFS, BY I think SNN).

Bristol is 2011m long, LBA is 2250m. Has Bristol not had its odd share of trans-atlantics other than CO?

I think I recently saw a picture of a BY 767 departing BOH for the Caribbean, which is 2271m long.

Does that mean we'll have a MON A330 stopping in BFS during the winter months too, Tom?

Apparantly, LBAspotter posted the dates of the winter cruise flights from LBA a while ago, if you do a search for threads started by me go to the one marked 'new routes for LBA from Jet2' or something like that.

I think the main problem with LBA is the weather up here, and also the height, though its not that much higher than Bristol.

The runway extension is supposed to be completely in the next few years, LBA would definitly need to upgrade the terminal should a new New York route start, I can see it happening with Leeds been an important business centre, and the cities of Leeds and Bradford having large populations.

Have any of you people heard “rumors” suggesting that Jet2 plan to station 5 Boeing 757 at LBA, therfore it looks like their in the market to procure a/c for longhaul??

Maybe, who knows :diablo:

Just remembered, they cant buy new 757s, they discontinued in 2004

Indeed who know, there have been all sorts of rumours flying about regarding the future of Jet2. I understand that MAN is also to receive some 757s.

The 1st two 757s arrive this winter, initially to operate the Tenerife flights, and I imagine the shorter routes with high demand (I.e - Geneva?Malaga?Alicante?).

Channel Express dont purchase new aircraft, all the 737s are a fair old age (Ex Lufthansa,Ansett etc), as are the 757s that LFC has provided a link to, no new 757s is no problem for them.

If jet2 have a reasonable sized fleet of 757s they can easily use them for trans-atlantic flights

They can 'easily' do that, but they may not want to.

Not a typical low cost market, never really been tried before, it would be a huge risk.

A less risky strategy is to have them plying their trade on the med routes, guranteed money spinners.

We will see.

Your thought on this seems to make sense, never the less i do envisige transatlantic flights from LBA, i guess its the managment of LBA to request tenders for these kinds of services (correct me if im wrong)

For example Continental airlines flies daily from Belfast to newark airport, New York, couldnt their be a similar arrangment for LBA

BTW iv done some research and in the 80s LBA had its first transatlantic flight to Toronto, also that year it welcomed a 747

Agreed, as I said earlier I can see us getting a New York service, but not immediately, I would imagine traffic would be strong between LBA and New York.

One of the main problems I could invisage with a CO service, is that they would be stealing pax from their own services at MAN, but still, they operate from both EDI and GLA which are reletively close, as are BHX and MAN, so it may not be a problem.

As I said earlier, I have read lots of rumours about this service maybe starting in spring 2006, but this is just rumours.

You are, perhaps, making the mistake of assuming that runway length is the ONLY thing that determines take off performance. Yes, it is important, but you also must assure OBSTACLE clearance in the event of an engine failure after V1. 32 at LBA is very definitely obstactle limited. An increase in runway length would, however, help.....using a technique called (by Mr. Boeing) Improved Climb, you can use excess runway length to acclerate to a higher than normal take off speed (and higher than normal V2) to improve your initial climb gradient, and therefore improve obstacle clearance.

I knew there was something that made us different to BRS in terms of the type of a/c the runway could handle.

How is 14 for obstacles? Is that the one with the chevin in the way?
