The Air Transat plane was flying from Toronto to Mexico. Because a Canadian citizen named Sami Kahil was on a U.S. no-fly list, the plane was shadowed until it landed at Ixtapa, Mexico. Here the passenger was arrested and spent a night in a Mexican jail. His family were returned immediately to Canada. He followed the next day, but was not allowed to fly over the U.S.

The crux of the matter, apart from the guy losing his vacation, is how and why was the U.S. notified. I know that the U.S. asked for details of passengers on U.S. overflights and the request was refused by the Canadian government. So could the U.S. be secretly tapping airline computers for passenger lists? We know they have been secretly tapping phone calls and e-mails, so I wouldn't put this past them.

All flights that land/depart or overfly the US Landmass have to fill in a form called an EAPIS that lists the crew and all passengers, these are to filed at least 2hrs before departure.

The Electronic Advance Passenger Information System, or eAPIS, allows you to enter or upload passenger and crew manifests online. Reports are available through eAPIS for Customs and Border Protection use.

All Airlines have to fill this in wether PAX or Cargo.

So the U.S. is NOT secretly tapping airline computers for passenger lists, or secretly tapping phone calls and e-mails.

Hope this helps

Thanks Heavy for the clarification, but they have admitted secretly tapping phone calls and e-mails and history will demonstrate that like an iceberg, there is always more going on than you see on the surface! ;)
