I think i saw an e-mail on one of the mailing groups that said it was going to be delayed till May.

I am unable to confirm this either way though.

It opens on February 5, it was scheduled for January 29 but without any reason or explanation it was delayed. I´ve heard it´s related to the new automated baggage handling system, which is very complex and still has problems deciding what to do with your bags :diablo:

Look at these pics if you are interested, It´s going to be a big improvement for Barajas, I have been there while it was being built and it´s impressive, the new tower which have been in service for three or four years is very nice too.

As far as you know, are there any plans for building a train or underground stop at the new terminals? I know there is already an underground station at the 'old' terminals.

Yes, it´s going to be an underground station, the idea is to extend the underground from the old terminal station. The regional goverment intention is to finish it in 14 months or so, just in time for the elections :diablo:

In fact, the undeground extention for the new terminal was planned long time ago, but that was when the regional and national goverment were ruled by the same party, after the elections they had to spend a lot of time to agree again. This is because AENA (the airports and air navigation authority) depends from the infrastructure ministry but the public transport in Madrid region is managed by the regional gov, and no one wanted to pay alone the bill for the underground. The solution has been to give the contract to a private company, which will charge the regional gov for each transported passenger. But don´t worry, you won´t notice the difference, the same ticket for all the transport network will be used.

The question is though, will British Airways refer to it as "BA Barajas"? ;)

The new terminal is HUGE, passed through Barajas in October and it was almost complete. The use of colour in the exterior paintwork is also erm...interesting.

Funny, from memory the extension to line 8 opened just before the 2000 general elections.

Yes, I think so, but this is the extension to the new terminal, which is a few kilometers further.
