They've certainly been hitting the news today, the main points being:

  • Online check-in from Spring this year.
  • Plans to raise £600m this year to finance the first long-haul flight network centred on Scotland with 10 widebodied aircraft, presumably B763s to begin with.
  • Looking to the future, B787s or A350s.
  • At least half of the aircraft would fly from Edinburgh Glasgow, linking Scotland with destinations such as Canada, Las Vegas, Boston and Los Angeles. But Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff and Stansted are also mentioned.

Exciting times ahead it seems, I hope that they can get the funding this year that they require!

Online check-in is a huge advantage for any airline. If it means you can get to the airport 30 minutes before departure, knowing that you've got yourself a decent seat, then its great. :)

Maybe it's even more of an advantage for a holiday airline, families will want to sit together, anything that can help that can only be a good thing!

Looks like very exciting times ahead for FlyGlobespan!

I take it then Aer Lingus' general financial situation is doing alot better than it was then if they are after some shiny new A330's!

Well if you don't mind queing up at check-in 2 hours beforehand, and to then be given a crap seat, I think you should reconsider this statement.

I appreciate that not many holiday airlines offer the online check-in service, probably due to cost implications, but its just another way of attracting customers...and I hope it proves to be a success, because then other 'holiday' airlines may well consider to intoruce it.

When I was working with FCA at Gatwick last year, we offered a Day Before Check-In service, whereby all the passengers bags (except handluggage of course!) was taken into storage, seat issued and boarding pass printed - and all for an extra £5! All they had to then was turn up, and report to a representative at the Ticket Desk 45 minutes before STD, and then they were allowed to proceed to the gate.

It saves soooo much time, and is great for passengers that have to travel long distances in order to get to the airport...

I feel that on-line check in is the way ahead!

I know that when i go to Canada, that i will use on-line check in for my flights to Calgary and Vancouver, 12 hours ahead, so that there is no need for me to wake up 4am in Toronto, to be at the airport 2 hrs ahead, just to get a decent seat.

The same as for any other airline...

Get passenger to do the check-in agents job from home...
Get rid of check-in agent...
Save money.

Self service check-in has nothing to do with customer service from the airlines point of view. Except from a marketing point of view of course.

From what I hear at GLA anyway- BA require just as many check-in staff and online check-in actually creates more problems- and thats with the well travelled business sorts. Imagine what mayhem the once yearly Benidormers will cause.
