-United use terminal 7 at JFK, not 3. I'm not sure how much you'll get to experience the terminal upon your arrival, given you'll clear customs then be landside. Upon departure, however, T7 has some really nice facilities. BA use that terminal, as well. Your flight should be fine. UA has pretty decent service on intl flights, contrary to popular belief.

-Have a good trip. I remember flying United 905 more than three years ago from Terminal 3 at Heathrow and into Terminal 7 in New York.
Not that it matters now (as you'll be on your way), but Terminal 3 has to be the worst terminal at Heathrow. No windows to look out of, poor choice of shops/eateries in the departures area and it always seems to be under some sort of construction.
When I visited Terminal 7 at JFK, British Airways seemed to be working hard to make their presence known. All of the signage in the terminal appeared to be in a British Airways style - blue and using their well-known typeface.
United as an airline was really great and their inflight entertainment was good, too. The PTVs were quite small (even back then), so if they haven't been upgraded since November 2002, they won't be the best around.
