I flew Qantas a few times to Australia as well as British Airways, both were fantastic, remember when people give you reports it is only their opinion like this is mine, and they may expect different things to you so hence they didn;t like it, BA & Qantas are much the same, except with Qantas there isn't so much eye candy (being the stewardessess :D alot are male with Qantas)
That flight code as you stated is a BA code share and the flight is operated with Qantas, it appears like BA does not fly directly to melbourne, I just checked the BA website on a few dates and could not get a BA flight up.
In my humble experience I would go with Qantas, I have always found them to be superb

I flew to MEL a few years back with BA on the way and QF back. I'd go with BA - friendly crew, great service - what you'd expect from a full-service airline. QF weren't as good though, poor IFE, the overall service wasn't as good. If I had the choice I'd definately choose BA.

BA are suspending the Melbourne route due to lack of demand. That probably explains why BA011 doesnt exist anymore. They still offer seats on Qantas flights to Melbourne however.

BA have transferred the operating of the Melbourne route to Qantas and they will now operate 2 daily rotations. The BA service will still operate but will terminate in Singapore.

I've looked at Emirates.
Me dear old Mum flew Emirates (although from Gatwick). She said the "3 Leg" (Dubai, Singapore, Melbourne) journey was better (For her at least).
But I really wanted to take my Son on a 747.
I think I may go Singapore Airlines. Maybe even going for the 2 night "Stopover".
Singapore's such a nice place. :cool:

If you want the 747 and a cheap fare why not look at Malaysia Airlines. They have some special fares out at the moment from LHR to AUS. You would fly 744 LHR - KUL and either 744 or 772 KUL - MEL depending on the day and time of travel. Alternatively if you prefer BA, most fares allow you to route via Sydney at no extra cost and so you can take the BA 744 LHR-SIN-SYD or LHR-BKK-SYD and then catch and QF internal flight down to MEL (included in the fare). Another option would be to take BA LON - SIN and then QF SIN - MEL. That way you are travelling two thirds of the way with BA. BA/QF have close ties and so the fares offered allow travel on either carrier. One tip! Look at the Qantas fares. They're sometimes cheaper and you can use BA services!

I'm about to start planning a trip to see my Aunt, who lives in Melbourne.
I've flown a couple of times to Singapore (for work related reasons) with BA, I couldn't fault them.
So, for this trip, I started by looking on BA.com for ticket pricing.
They were the cheapest of the "Main" carriers on this route, but the website stated that the flight number is BA7318 and the carrier would be Qantas for this flight (presumably because of the "One-World" alliance").
How can I be sure that I get a booking for BA themselves?
What happened to BA011?
I know a few people who've flown this route on Qantas, and quite frankly I wasn't that impressed with the reports.
Or shall I shell out a bit extra to fly Singapore Airlines?
