Having said that I was about seven or eight at the time and aeroplane mad, so I'm afraid it might have stank and I can't remember how bad it was. I would get it anyway (I'd be grateful if you could tell me how).

LAST EDITED ON 15-11-01 AT 11:41 AM (GMT)[p]I can just about recall the series. I remember it being fairly gripping stuff for young lad but it was a long long time ago, so as to if it has stood the test of time who can tell.

Am I right in thinking that the flying shots were done with a large scale radio controlled model and a cockpit mock up mixed with "stock footage" or am I confusing this with something else ?
I seem to remember something about that time one evening on one of those magazine type of programmes that used to be on the telly after the six o'clock news.
A large model Lanc, I think it was over 20ft wingspan, was being demonstrated for the cameras whilst the presenter interviewed some of the actors and production crew. All went well until the owner, making a dramatic close fly by for the end of the piece lost control and his pride and joy flew into the side of an outside broadcast truck live on air.

LAST EDITED ON 15-11-01 AT 12:11 PM (GMT)[p]The Model aero club I belong to built 5 scale radio control Lancasters. Unfortunately there are only 3 left (1 of the damaged models is repairable). They were featured, I think, on one of the BBC local area news programmes. The Models are fairly big, I can't remember the exact scale but I think it's around 1/9th scale, but I'll check.
The incident you refer to, the cause was a faulty servo, on one of the undercarriage doors,which very effectively drained the receiver battery, causing the crash.

Thanks Neilly what a relief, All those years ago and I hadn't dreamed it after all !!
There seem to be very little out there in the net about the series apart from there were 13 episodes made by the now defunct Thames Televison in 72-72 directed by Gerry Brown, (from an unoffical thames tv site) and starring Robert Urquart as W/Cdr MacPhearson, Jack Watling as "Doc" Saxon and Rutger Hauer who appeared in an episode as a member of the Dutch resistance (from filmographies on the respective actors official sites). Apart from that "Google" and other search engines draw a blank.

The Lancaster that ,I think, you're thinking of, belonged to Keith Mitchell, who now flies a 1/4 scale Beaufighter. His Lanc. was modelled on a 617 Sqd. aircraft, & dropped a Tallboy bomb. If memory serves me right the model crashed while doing a bit of dive bombing, but I might be wrong, as you say it was a few years ago!
The series sounds correct, too.

Can anyone remember the TV series 'The Pathfinders'? It's about a Lancaster Pathfinder Squadron. It was shown in the 70's. The reason I ask, the video club I belong to, are offering the whole series on video. I'd like to know, was any good & was there much aeroplane action or the usual lots of talking? Is it worth getting?
