RE: 'New' Hurricane

It came out of a University in India, check out the www.warbirdsofindia.com webs site.

Peter Vacher paid £27,000 for a BoB veteran!

V6846 is still rumoured to be in India for the those who want to look..

I have heard it is at AJD Engineering

RE: 'New' Hurricane

That Hurricane came from the Benares Engineering College or "BENCO" as it is know. Ironically, lot of news papers in India reported the sale of the aircraft as "World War 2 Junk Plane", but no one gave the type!

Its a steal at 27K, One of the newspapers quoted Mr. Vacher as saying "I know I paid a very high price for it....." ..who is he kidding? :D

Anyway, if it had not been for Mr. Vacher, that aircraft would have turned to rust if not sold to the local scrap merchant in someyears....Pretty sure it will be restored to take to the air again. I believe this is the first Hurricane to come out of India.

BTW I was trying to get behind the history of the Hurricane at the IAF Museum. The serail number is AB832. Can anyone tell how the aircraft came to be there?

Indian Hurricanes

Hi Jagan, haven't heard from you for a long while, most of the "old gang" are at this forum now

http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/vafrefugees/vafmsgboard.mv?parm_fu…

The serial of "AB832" is probably not it's genuine one as far as I have read.
If you could find it's real one, it would be great, but I don't know where on the airframe there is a data plate though ?

The late Doug Arnold apparently aquired a pair of Indian Hurricane wings to go with the rebuild of the wingless Hurricane Mk IV "KZ321" G-HURY from Israel ,that is now owned by TFC at Duxford.

Do you know anything about them ?
I wonder if they are from R4118 or V6846 that is supposed to be still at IAF Patna ?

Jagan

best chance to find anything would be to look for the small brass identication plate located on Joint C in the cockpit. This joint is directly under the port edge of the instrument panel. If it is still there, it will have the serial/tail no and Hawker construction number stamped into it. If the plate is missing, the only other places the tail number could be stencilled would be on the inside of the cockpit door. If it is not there, its fabric off the port side of the cockpit woodwork. Sometimes, Hawker put the number on the back of the doghouse (or at least the last 3 digits) or on the back of a removable panel (say tail fairing). Hope it helps and keep us posted!

RE: Indian Hurricanes

Latest is that G-HUPW is a five year project ( to flying status I assume). It served with 605 county of Warwick Sqn.
However this does not increase the total number of airworthy Hurri's in the UK, as G-TWTD AE997 is departing for the US (Surprise, surprise).
Also leaving for the Florida sunshine is Breightons lovely pink Spitfire PR.XI PL965, apparently to return to the UK at some time. However as we know some things have a habit of never coming back.

Was this Hurricane really a BoB vet?

Gents:

While I'm always pleased to hear about a South Asia connection, can someone confirm that this India-retired Hurricane was in fact a BoB veteran? I know nothing about this particular aircraft (apologies; but I haven't even seen the Flypast write-up on it); but AFAIK the Hurricanes that served in India were mostly cannon-armed Mk IIBs, IICs and IVs; plus some Canadian-built examples. Would these have been in service during the BoB?

If it *was* a BoB vet, wow ... !

RE: Indian Hurricane - Serial No

As Mick says, AB 832 is probably not the original serial. Francis Mason's "The Hawker Hurricane" (Crecy, 2001) has an Appendix which attempts to list "all Hurricanes built and converted", but I couldn't spot an AB series of numbers at all, and hardly any 832s. The nearest number I found (stretching it a bit, and assuming weathering and mis-reading) was LB 852, which was a Mk IV which served with No 42 Squadron in India in 1944.

Jagan, could AB 832 have been an IAF serial?

RE: Indian Hurricane - Serial No

Snoopy,

With ref to the Hurricane having Indian Serial Numbers.. Indian Serial Numbers have come into vogue only after independence i.e. 15th Aug 47, I dont think the IAF had its own serail numbers before that. Even as late as Oct Nov 1947, IAF operated tempests under thier original serial numbers (the MW and PR series)

Now all accounts i read mention that the Hurricane was retired in 1945 and few if any units may have had Hurri's on thier strenght in 1946. I dont know what the situation might have been in 1947. so iMHO no Hurricane was on the inventory of the IAF as on Aug 1947. All units by that time flying Spitfires and Tempests. so I dont know the origin of AB832.
