Didn't see the programme you mentioned but the programe with NX611 lifting her tail clear is called 'Night Flight' (brief mention on the BBC website) and is on in the next couple of months I think.
Band of Brothers has been very good so far, wonder what happened to those 'cardboard cutouts'.........wouldn't mind one for the back garden!

In the light of Bob's post,I thought I ought to say that I've been away recently,so haven't been able to put the usual posts up.The TV guide I read also gave a description of the battlefields programme that didn't make it look particularly worthwhile.Good job I ignored them and watched it myself.Some beautiful footage of NX611.
Not meaning to gloat,but I also have ITV Digital,which means I get DiscoveryWings :) Excellent programme about aircraft restoration the other night which included a tour of the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington ,and ofcourse a look at the Halifax.There was also a feature on the East Kirkby Lanc,taxiing in full throated stereo :) Even if she doesn't fly,I think Just Jane should be considered one of the UK's aeronautical gems.

I agree, the Battlefields prog was actually extremely good & I do not wish to criticise too much, indeed Band of Brothers is also excellent! My only gripe generally (& sadly the Battlefields prog fell into this trap too) was that the poor old Halifax & Stirling bearly ever get a mention. Pity that I missed the show which featured YAM's Halifax (are they doing re runs?)
I think it's about time that we all rallied round & got a scratch built Halifax & Stirling, both to fly of course!
I am sadly a little biased, check out www.57rescue.org to find out why :-)

I think the programme mentioned, with YAM's Halifax and NX611 the East Kikby Lanc , must be the same one I saw on the ordinary Discovery/Home and Leisure channel earlier this year.
It was a series of about nine or ten programmes about old historic stuff including cars, tanks ,military vehicles ,trains etc.
If I remember correctly, Historic Flying's Spitfire Mk IX MK912 was also in that particular episode...either that or another one it was anyway!?
The series has already been aired at least three times on the above channel, at different times in the day, and lastly at 8.00 or 8.30am , most of which I managed to see again.

ok the last in the seris of battlefields is on tonight on arnherm. band of brothers is reapeated on wednesday ?? on bbc1 and normally on a 9:00pm on bbc2 on a friday and is GREAT.
i didn't watch all the last battlefirelds as there was a documentary on the mig29 crash acouple of years ago on 4 at the same time.

Band of Brothers.
Great stuff, not the heroes you see in other Yankee films,how they won the war etc. It is surprising how you can transform Hatfield airfield into a war zone one minute and flatten it the next. Computer aircraft were good but, how long before they use them all the time in war films?
The shots of all the C47's taking off was the best since "a bridge too far".
North Weald shots. How many spotted the street lighting at the end of the runway?
If there is more of these good quality tele-serials made, I will carry on watching them.

If you think the Halifax & Stirling have very little said about them, spare a thought for the Mosquito. The ammout of damage this aeroplane did to the German war effort & how much recognition it receives by comparison with Spitfires & Lancasters certainly ain't fair!!! At least the Battlefields programe did give the Mossie a good review, so I guess those of us who are Mosquito biased can't complain (this time).

Yeh there is going to be 9 and we've had 4 so far (one was adouble bill so 3 fridays worth so far).
but its the most expensive tv show so far (£85 million) so me thinks not another one - unless he does some marine lot in the pacific...

Must agree that B of B has been pretty good to date, must watch the remainder as they appear!
Anyone know when "Night & Day" is due for screening? (Heard it has been re-named though?)
Also got a whisper that there are plans to make a similar "Bomber Command" movie / TV series. Anyone want some extra's??!
PS - I agree, the Mossie has been forgotten about, but then again, so has the Whitley, Defiant, Hampden etc etc, and as I AM very much a Halifax supporter, I am only really inclined to sound off about Hally's with an occasional thought for the Stirling. Sorry if the lack of a Mossie mention offended :-)

ps. Halibag, you stick up for the Halifax, & no it doesn't bother me, not mentioning the Mosquito. What does annoy, is when TV companies make programmes with histotians & specialist people, who seem to forget there were more aeroplanes on the allied side than just Spitfires, Lancasters, Mustangs & B-17's.

'Night and Day' has been renamed 'Night Flight' due to be screened on BBC1 in December...I know there is a new ITV soap starting soon called 'Night and Day' so that may account for the name change of the BBC drama...
And yes the Mosquito is often neglected in terms of the recognition it is given...it was certainly one of the most if not the most versatile aircraft of WWII...and definitely one of my favourites ;)

New programme apparently.....I hope !
Supposed to be about how display routines are sometimes taken to the "limit", and the consequences thereafter.
I bet the two Mig 29's at Fairford are featured.....yet again....but I don't know what else will be.
Just hope it is respectful and knowledgeable, and not OTT.

"Air Shows" on Discovery Channel
24 hours after it was shown, I'm surprised no-one's commented on it yet. Overall (although I missed the first 15 minutes), I thought it was a well pitched, thoughtful, informed and informative programme.
The producers seemed to have gone to great lengths to explain the collossal amount of planning which goes into an airshow, and also the volumes of necessary safety legislation involved, without blinding the audience with beauraucrat-speak.
While there were a few clips of crashes shown, they each seemed to be shown in the context of the narration at the time, and the subjects were treated with respect. Certainly none were presented in the sensationalist way that we have come to expect from some quarters of the media, and for that I feel the producers should be congratulated.
The most balanced airshow programme I've seen for some time. :)

Typical isn't it........after I tell everyone about it....I forgot to watch it myself!!!!!!!
Oh well.....the good (bad?) thing about the Discovery channel is that they repeat virtually everything until you are sick of it !

I agree with Steve Airshow on Discovery was well put together, very even in it's comments (even though the Mig 29's showed up again. Do the Russians get repeat fees?).
Try Discovery Channel Saturday night, again. Battlefield is on again (18.00 hrs). I know I mentioned it last week, but it wasn't about Bomber Command, so we'll try again!

...Battlefields presented by Prof Richard Holmes covered Bomber Command operations and featured quite a bit of footage of NX611 "Just Jane". Was this the programme that they lifted the tail off the deck at full power for???? Or was that another programme about Bomber Command? Where was the usual Ant Harrington "On The Telly Tonight" announcement?:-)
Band of Brothers has also been quite worthwhile watching, the scenes at North Weald came across quite authentically - hard to spot the cardboard cutouts! And the battle scenes had the cat diving for cover as rounds ricocheted around the surround sound. (Hmmm, try saying that after a few drinks!)
