Can't say I saw this one coming....

easyJet, Europe’s leading low-fares airline, today announced plans to commence operations at Birmingham International Airport with the introduction of two new routes connecting Birmingham with Geneva and Grenoble.

The new daily service to Geneva, with fares from £22.99 one way including taxes, will commence on 14 December and the new twice weekly Grenoble flight, with fares from £24.99 one way including taxes, will commence on 22 December, will provide skiers with low-cost, easy access to the French and Swiss slopes this season.

Birmingham is the 13th UK airport to be added to the easyJet operation and takes the total number of airports on the airline’s European network to 79. As part of the airline’s vision to offer travellers easy access to easyJet’s unique brand of low-fares with convenience, within 90 minutes of their home from their local airport, and coupled with the increasing demand for independent ski travel, easyJet recognised the great potential for growth at Birmingham International Airport.

As the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham has a huge catchment area and a demand for low-fare services and as a result the airline expects to carry 45,000 passengers on these two new routes within the first season of operation.

David Osborne, UK Regional General Manager, commented:

“easyJet’s expansion from Birmingham International Airport is great news for skiers from the Midlands, giving them more choice and a brand new service to Grenoble. With the daily service to Geneva and twice weekly flight to Grenoble they now have the opportunity to fly to the major ski gateways for the French and Swiss Alps.

Our expansion in Birmingham reflects our commitment to growth across the UK, we recognise the strong demand for low-fares with convenience and Birmingham's great potential."

Peter Vella, Business Development Director at Birmingham International Airport, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome easyJet to Birmingham and offer our passengers a brand new service to Grenoble and increased services to Geneva. We look forward to working with easyJet to make these routes a success and we hope this is the start of a growing presence at Birmingham.

I can't imagine it being anything other that a 319 given that easyJet Switzerland's fleet is all Airbus. However the Grenoble is a W pattern on a Luton based aircraft, so that may well be a 737-700.

Yes I didnt see it coming either and it is fab news for BHX! Also see that Ryanair is expanding also!

Apparently a mixture of 73G's and A319's, also to be operated by both Easyjet UK and Easyjet Switzerland. Although yet to be confirmed. All the details are now online on my website....

Not suprised, can only imagine easy jets operation at Bhx growing as the airport's been keen to lose BAcon and get them in for some time! so the rumours go on the ramp ;)
