Is our hobby getting to expensive? Do we appericate the people who give us some very good freeware?.

I for one could not enjoy Flightsims without them. The cost of payware make things out of my reach. I have to live on a fixed income and it makes it difficult. FSX, between £50 -£60, plus having to upgrade my computer. Sorry Micro$oft I will stick to FS2004.

I also thinking the cost of Flight Simulation is ridiculously high, with most add-ons costing more than the simulator itself. And worst of all, like you mention, upgrading your PC just to run a 'game' is costly.

Yes, while the program costs are very low considering their sophistication and the amount of work that goes into them, the cost of upgrading a computer is certainly high and I can confirm that even with an 8800 GT graphics card and 2GB RAM, the sliders for FSX have to be set very low to get 'judder' free operation.

Having said that, If all you do is fly large jets from one place to another at very high altitudes then FSX does have its advantages. Also the missions are very good. The problem is the sparsity of scenery you can get in FSX with the sliders set to the left. And its a shame because the scenery really is very good at the higher settings but the 'ride' you get as a result is simply awful!

At present I wouldn't recommend anyone who likes to fly low and look at the scenery to get FSX. They may as well stick with FS9 and get what I'm told are the excellent scenery add-ons if any are still available. And that brings me to the question. Do either of you have knowledge of any scenery add-ons for FS9 that you can recommend, particularly for Gt.Britain and/or Europe, and where I can go to get them please?

The prices soon rack up, but, if you take a look at other hobbies the price is probably comparable if not cheaper. Whatever hobby you get into will require the purchase of equipment in some shape or form.

As an example, a few years ago I cancelled my subscription to an online WW2 sim because I couldn't justify spending that much on a game, plus the occasional upgrade to keep the game running well. I bought a cheap telescope instead with the intention of doing some amateur astronomy. Three years later and that hobby has cost me far more than I ever would have spent on flight sims. I guess these things just suck us in  . There are far worse things out there that people could spend their money on. I guess it comes down to how far you are willing and able to take it.

Anyone tempted by the cheap FSX: Deluxe offers on e-bay or Amazon marketplace? Amazon have it for £35, e-bay vendors have savings in the region of 7-10 pounds.
