One for Lancman.

I have heard an amazing rumour about KB889 at Duxford. Apparently, the interior of the aircraft is currently out of bounds to all museum staff as there is some radioactive material contained within the instruments in the cockpit.

Is this likely/possible? It sounds amazing but anything is possible these days.

Show me a 1940's dial that isn't radioactive. Watches included. As for making it out of bounds, well, it's not likely to be a harmful dosage at all. Sounds liek an official health and safety line. I'll go and dust for them.....

It's true , all the (old) airframes at East Fortune are shut now as the instruments used radium to glow at night , ironically , a lot of these instruments were made just over the other side of the Forth by Marconi/Ferranti and the foreshore over there was the site of a major clean up before building work could start as there had been traces of radium found , apparently just dumped there.

Yeah, all the old instruments are radioactive to some dregree or other, but I don't think we're all going to mutate or lose our hair if we happen to have a Lanc RPM gauge sat on top of our PC's!!!

...at least, I hope not!!!

If you don't know potential the dangers of long exposure to Radium 226 then stay away from the inside of old aircraft; and their dials (even if on sale anywhere).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-01-03 AT 00:20 AM (GMT)]Oh here we go again..(YAWWN) If anyone is concerned over the radium in their guages then get them checked or their aircraft checked. Why is it that any mention of old airplanes with original guages causes mass concern about radiation poisining? Does anyone remember the USAF tests in the 60s ? that dropped radiation over populated areas to find out how far spread any problems would be>? I cant remember exactly the details of this testing but we covered it a little in school in the 70s.
Lancman I still have a combi air temp oil and fuel psi guage above my pc and I am not worried although I could give your rpm guage a good home in my halifax panel (GRIN)
