Finally got my copy today, and I have got to say, it's superb! There's quite a lot of different events covered, and I was a little fearful that it wouldn't show much of the tail-up taxi runs in the end, but the whole last section of the tape covered this and was excellent-everything form towing her across to the old runway on steel matting, to on-board film of Mike Chaterton and Ian Hickling doing the runs. AND, no end of footage of all the runs themselves!

Really, really great stuff, an absolute must for the Lanc enthusiast, and I have to say, watching those runs, even though I'd already seen bits of them in the actual 'Night Flight' drama itself, I was nearly wetting myself! How quickly she lifted her tail, rolled along...and then was that a sad little sigh as her engines were cut and she slowed down again?

It must be a great temptation when her tail is in the air to push the throttles forward a bit and pull back on the stick a little….just to see what happens }>

LOL! I'll tell you what would happen-she'd take off! Knackered old main spar or no, I'm sure she'd quite happily lift off and do a circuit before landing again. Of course it's all fantasy, but I'm sure she'd be able to manage it! You wouldn't want to get into Vulcan XH558 territory though-'accidentally' lifting your main wheels off a bit; lightweight Lancasters don't like playing hopscotch down runways!

Hi Peter,
I hope Lancman don't mind me butting in,but I think I can answer your post.Poor old NX611 used to be displayed at the Blackpool Air Centre for a number of years after she was grounded by HAC,the people who used to operate her.All that salty air didn't do the poor girl too much good. Her engines were run occasionally but geerally her condition deteriorated.Just look at the poor old Vulcan that's still there! This 'trauma' has left her with a few salt corrosion issues in various bits of the airframe, and it seems that the wing spars may have suffered some ill effects.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-12-02 AT 08:58 PM (GMT)]Hello Ant.
N/P
She shouldnt have suffered too much in the way of spar corrosion as long as she was kept buttoned up and her flaps were not left to droop down. Would be a shame though if this is true and keeps her permanently grounded....

Ant - I think the condition of the mainspar also has a lot to do with how she was dismantled at various stages in her life.

RE: Peter-'Just Jane' video

Hi Peter-do let us/me know what you think of the video once you've seen it, particularly the heartwarming/heartbreaking fast taxi runs!

I must admit, I don't know anything concrete about 611's spars, but I've read in so many different places here and there about 'the cost of a new spar' to get her flying etc, I've just kind of assumed! It seems a reasonable assumption, too-salt corrosion and all that, which is bound to have crept into her crevices as I think she suffered somewhat before the RAF finally got hold of her. Even then, her control runs etc were simply sawn through when the RAF moved her to East Kirkby, and only about half the bolts were put back in at each transport joint, so rectifying all that was one of the first jobs Ian Hickling had to do when before they could start to taxi her again.

I must say, I do think she's best off where she is-alive and proud, and a major attraction in her own right. There's no 'need' to try and fly her, not with PA474 so active year in year out.

Anyway, let us know what you think!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-12-02 AT 00:08 AM (GMT)]Thanks David,I can understand she'd have had a pretty rough time with all the moves she been subjected to in the past.By 'how she was dismantled',do you mean rough handling or something more severe? They wouldn't have chopped through the spar at some point would they?? *shiver*

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-12-02 AT 03:55 PM (GMT)]Thanks for the replies and information chaps.
She was rough housed pretty good over her years of dismantling and reassembly. Ian showed me one area aft of the bomb door on the stbd side where a lifting strap damaged the skin and one of the formers so she now sports a battle damage reapir patch over this area(in 1996) Ian came out to view our lancaster and give her a full inspection in 1998 and I asked him wether or not she was capable of ever flying. He said that if the owners agreed to fly her it could be done albeit everything that has been done to her to date would have to be undone and then redone over using airworthy parts materials and procedures which would take a very long time to do....
So Maybe lancman is correct in saying that she is fine where she is on the ground doing her taxi runs.... that is until 474 goes into retirement!!

Mike...
I recieved a email back re the video and they are sending it to me asap. I cant wait as I already have the other two previous ones. I just hope there is some shots of her flaps and bombdoors working on this one????? I will let you know what i think ater i see it for sure!

RE: Peter-'Just Jane' video

Sorry Peter, I was hoping to see the bomb doors/flaps in motion too, but not a mention is made of them, other than the fact that in some shots they're open/up, and are closed/down in others! Ah well, the tail lifting on those taxi runs should be enough to keep you going for a while...

It's amazing, the times I've seen '474 going about her stuff, and even film of '213 over the pond there, but there really is a special something about the way '611 has slowly crept back to 'life'!

Hi All,

Just thought I'd bring to the attention, of other Bomber Command buffs: A DVD from DD Videos, 'Bomber Command: Celebrating 60 Years'. It's got two documenaries on it, Reaping the Whirlwind & Enemy Coast Ahead plus extra newsreel footage. I think it was about £15, & well worth it.

Cheers,
Neilly

Lancman

The owners of Just Jane had better be careful. If she spends too much time running around with her tail in the air, some nasty type from the Museum will try to stick a budgie perch under it!!!;)

YIIIPPPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike I finally recieved my Just jane vid yesterday. I watched it last night and I thought it was fantastic!! This third video is very well done and the scenes of 611 running along the runway with her tail up was really neat. on the other side of the coin i was choked up at a couple of poits.. one being when the engine made it home after 60 years and also the german nightfighter interviews..

It was well worth the agonizing wait and argument with the postal delivery guy... ;0)

RE: YIIIPPPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great to hear that mate, I'm glad you've enjoyed it as much as I did. A near faultless video really-I'm just not sure I need to see that old lady get her lipstick all over the bomb aimers bubble quite so much though!!!

Those tail-high runs are fantastic, there's just something about it all, even though we're so used to seeing '474 and '213 go about their stuff.

I reckon those two Chatterton's are ruddy marvelous, too!
