Un Spitfire del Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) se salió de la pista mientras aterrizaba en Coningsby el 11 de mayo.
El Spitfire MK356 se salió de la pista por un "pequeño fallo técnico" y "se detuvo rápidamente en la hierba", según declaró a la BBC un portavoz de la Real Fuerza Aérea (RAF).
No se produjeron más daños en el pájaro de guerra ni en la pista, y el piloto no resultó herido.

El ejemplar, de 78 años, formaba parte de un lote de Spitfires Mk IX construidos en la fábrica de Castle Bromwich a principios de 1944. Estaba equipado con puntas de ala de envergadura completa y un motor Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 con un supercargador de dos velocidades y dos etapas optimizado para bajas altitudes, lo que lo convertía en un Mk LFIXe de bajo vuelo (LF).
El avión, que se incorporó a la BBMF en 1997 con las letras de código 2I-V del Escuadrón 443, también tenía los extremos de las alas recortados. Los extremos de las alas se añadieron posteriormente.

Joining the BBMF in 1997 wearing 443 Squadron code letters 2I-V, the aircraft also featured clipped wingtips. Full-span wingtips were added at a later date.
