When Hurricane Ian barrelled through the south eastern United States in September 2022, it left a path of destruction: dozens of lives were lost, hundreds of people were stranded and thousands of homes destroyed – causing tens of billions of dollars’ worth of damage. But relatively inexpensive pieces of equipment deployed in the skies above this disaster zone helped emergency and other state services deal with the unfolding tragedy in real time.
